"Tobias." He says. It briefly brings me back to when he would call my name just before he would beat the crap out of me with his leather belt that he wasn't even supposed to have.
Tris must notice that I'm not doing well, because she speaks up for me.
"What do you want?" She asks him. It doesn't sound malicious, but I know that she's just attempting be polite.
"To talk to my son. But it appears that he doesn't want to talk at the moment. I'll just do it later. Have a good day."
And then he walks away.
Tris laces her fingers through mine, silently telling me that he's gone and that I can relax now.
As if I didn't hear him go. As if the hairs on the back on my neck haven't gone back down. As if my heart hasn't started to beat normally again.
I squeeze her hand.
I need to get over this fear.
And I need to do it now.
I let go of Tris's hand and get up from the table.
