Chapter 47

The month after the engagement went by quickly. I had several interviews I had to do in regards to the nomination, and the engagement always came up, which I was always more than happy to talk everyone about. But the engagement news had been dying down slightly, it wasn't as headline inducing as it had been the first couple of weeks after.

It was the day after my 26th birthday and birthday party that Jimmy had thrown for me inside Studio 6B. Both of our families were there along with a huge grouping of our friends, I couldn't even begin to name them all. There ended up being well over 150 people there.

Jimmy and I hadn't made any official finalized plans for the wedding, or really sat down and talked about it because of everything else going on with the nomination. I had been really busy doing a small tour for the nomination, talking to different media outlets all over the country. Jimmy was of course busy with the show and the girls, so we had barely had a moment to ourselves, in a few days we were going to be going to L.A for the Awards.

I had only gotten home a day before my birthday. It was a Sunday and we didn't have any plans so I thought it would be fun to talk about the wedding and try to come up with some different ideas. I had plenty of ideas, but I wouldn't do anything without Jimmy agreeing.

I came down the stairs after getting dressed and smiled when I saw him sitting on the couch.

"Morning," he smiled as I got to the living room.

"Morning," I smiled, "So, do you have any ideas for the wedding?" I asked excitedly sitting next to Jimmy on the couch.

He nodded and sat to face me with a big smile, "So! I was thinking something small, just family basically. Maybe at the Hamptons house?"

I felt my smile drop, that's not what I had in mind at all, "Oh, you just want something small?"

He nodded, "Yeah! I thought that would be better than another huge wedding!"

"What if I wanted something bigger?" I asked pointing to myself.

He looked at me curiously, "Did you?" he asked in a semi-surprised voice.

I nodded a little, "Well, I didn't want something that only had like 20 people. That's never been the wedding I wanted."

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, "But...I don't know. I've already been down the road of a big wedding, I thought something smaller would be nice, babe."

"Yeah, you've been down the road of a big wedding. I know. But...this is my first wedding. This is going to be my only wedding. I don't' want that, I don't want something small with only a few people. I want my family and friends there with us. I want a beautiful ceremony and an amazing reception. It's going to be the happiest day of our lives, Jimmy."

"I know! I'm not saying it's not going to be, I just didn't think it was a big deal if it was big or small. I just think small is more personal, more intimate."

My eyes started to well up with tears, "But...I don't want that. That's not the wedding I thought I would have. I've had this idea in my head since I was 5 years old about what my wedding would look like. We can add personal touches to it to make it personal and intimate, but I don't want the whole thing to be small. Can't we compromise somehow?"

"Maggie, I'm sorry, I don't mean to make you upset. But I had my big wedding, and it doesn't interest me this time."

"But I haven't, Jimmy. I haven't had my big wedding. This is my wedding. I haven't been married before, and this is the only time I'm doing it," I said standing up and walking to the stairs.

Jimmy jumped up and followed me, "Maggie!" he called, coming up the steps after me. I went quickly to our room, and pulled out a bag, "What are you doing?" he asked me.

I shook my head as the tears started running down my face quickly, "I just need some time, okay?" I said, throwing some stuff from our closet into the bag.

"Time away from me?" he asked.

I nodded without looking at me, "Yeah...no. I don't know, Jimmy. I just had this thought in my head about my wedding and it's not lining up with what you want...I'm sorry, but I just need a little while alone to think. I never thought you would be this way about the wedding. I really thought you would be a bit more open to hearing my side of what I want."

I zipped up my bag once I threw my stuff from the washroom into it as well, but he blocked the door from the room to the hallway, "You're not compromising either, Maggie, this isn't just about me," he told me.

I felt myself go wide eyed as I looked at him, "I don't need to compromise! This is my first wedding. This is going to be my only wedding, Jimmy. I know that you had your wedding with Nancy, but this is different! I've never experienced it before, so why can't I have it the way I want it?"

"Because it's our wedding, Maggie," he said, his voice getting louder than I had ever heard it, "It's not just your wedding. And yes, I'm well aware that I've been married before, but this is still my wedding too. Just because it's my second and your first doesn't make it any less to me."

"I'm not saying that!" I said cutting him off.

"You are!" he said, moving his arms erratically, "I'm sorry that I got married before, okay? I'm sorry that I had a wedding before. But I'm not going to let this one turn into a circus with just a bunch of over the top shit! I'm not paying for that!"

"Who said anything about over the top shit and you paying for the wedding by yourself?" I asked angrily, pushing my way past him, "I didn't say this was something only you were paying for, Jimmy! Is that what you think this is?" I asked, with my voice getting louder with each passing word.

Jimmy and I had never fought like this. Not even close to it. Little nonsense spats here and there, but about dumb things like where we would eat or what movie to watch when we were more joking rather than fighting.

I descended the stairs with my overnight bag flung over shoulder, "No, I know this isn't what it is!" Jimmy yelled from behind me, "I just wish you would be more understanding of what I want too!"

I laughed humourlessly, "Coming from you right now, Jimmy, that doesn't really hold any weight. You're not even giving me a chance! You just keeping saying you don't want a big wedding without even asking me what I thought a big wedding was!"

I went and grabbed my purse from behind the couch and put that over my shoulder as well, "So what? You're just gonna walk out? Real mature, Maggie! We need to talk this out!" he said, grabbing my wrist, stopping me from reaching for the door handle to leave the apartment.

I gripped his hand covering my wrist with my other hand, trying to peel it off of me, "Let me go, Jimmy. You're just making this worse right now."

He squeezed a bit tighter make sure I wouldn't be able to get him off me, "Maggie! Would you listen? Let's talk it out!" he told me.

I shook my head, "No. Not right now. I need a day or so to cool off, Jimmy. Just let. Me. Go," I told him, trying to pull my wrist away from him with each word.

He scoffed and let my wrist go, "Jesus Christ. You're acting like a child, Maggie. Stomping your feet and running away when you don't get your way! You're 26 now, grow up," he told me heatedly.

My mouth popped open when he said that. I think he knew he had crossed the line as well. The age thing was something we tried not to mention too much, after everything that went on with the press and internet and everything.

"That was fucking low, Jimmy," I whispered as my vision began to go blurry from the tears.

His face was pale, "Maggie...I'm so so-"

"Save it," I spat back, "You talk to me when you're ready to be the mature 41 year old man that you are. You're gonna call me a child right now, James?" I said using his full first name, which I only used maybe a handful of time before, "Take a look at yourself in the mirror first. You wanted to be with me too, remember? Is this what you've always thought? I'm a child or something? Well, just remember I was willing to listen, but you weren't. You didn't give me a chance."

I got the door open and went to the elevator and hit the button to go down, luckily it came right away, before I stepped in a looked back over and Jimmy was standing in the hall, just outside the door to the apartment, he was looking at me with his mouth open, trying to find the words to say. But I didn't want to hear it. It felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest, and I couldn't believe Jimmy was the one that made me feel that way.

A/N - I'm no sure how fancy Jimmy and Nancy's wedding was but for the sake of this story it was fancy and big enough 😊
