Today's verse is one of the most profound and mind jolting verses I've ever come across.
This verse compares the good deeds of a man to a beautiful garden that has grapes and dates and all kinds of fruits and he's put in a lot of effort in it, so much so that now he's old and then, one day, he gives in to shaytan and does something that negates his good deeds and it's as if a fire has consumed all of his efforts.
This verse stresses the importance of not just doing good deeds but also being actively aware of not doing anything counterproductive that might cancel out all our efforts.
The specific context of this verse is in relation to a man who spends his money for the sake of Allah, and then indulges in things that cancel out a good willed charity (such as reminding the borrower constantly of his help, insulting him and giving charity for show off.)
This verse urges us to always be alert, and practice self restraint and save ourselves from a great loss.
This can be possible with three pre requisites -
🔺Ikhlas - When a deed is done for the sake of people's appreciation or acknowledgement, we are bound to get frustrated and lose self constraint when they forget our favours and turn ungrateful but of course, any deed done for the sake of Allah gets a reward that none of the world's appreciation can match.
🔺Sabr : We may not see the results just yet, and that may make us question and even stop ourselves from continuing; that's where Sabr comes in. To start doing and stop complaining and expect confidently because what is the reward of ihsan, if not ihsan?
🔺Strong will : This can only be achieved with Allah's help and we need to constantly purify our intentions and do our best to be patient in the face of adversity and ask Allah for help.
May Allah help us preserve our hard won deeds. Ameen! :)
