Muffled voices pulled me out of my slumber. Everything ached with pain. The beautiful field I was once laying in was now gone, replaced by an uncomfortable bed. I felt like I had been sleeping for years.
The voices that now surrounded me were a little louder and more understandable.
"She's moving!"
"No shit!"
"Stop shouting! She wouldn't want to wake up to all of this nonsense!"
"Stop shouting," I muttered. Everyone stopped talking. The whole room fell silent as I opened my eyes for the first time in what felt like months. I gazed around the room, trying to get my eyes to focus. Five blury faces stared back at me. I blinked a few times, adjusting to the bright light in the room.
"Brodie, you look like you're coming down from a really bad high," Matty said. The guys all busted up laughing. I let out a small chuckle, but instantly regreted it. I clutched my chest tightly.
"Dont make me laugh," I gasped. As if on command, the guys all rushe aorund me struggling to hug me.
"Brodie, don't ever fucking scare us like that again," Matt said. I smiled as their faces became a little clearer. Puffy eyed and red faced, the four boys who I called my family kissed and hugged my tightly.
"Can you all move so I can see my girlfriend," a soft voice suddenly said. The boys parted. Standing at the edge of my bed was Oli. His face was the saddest of all. The guys quietly shuffled out, leaving me alone with Oli. He slowly sat down at the edge of my bed, facing away from me.
"You scared me," he whispered. A single tear rolled his face. I flipped the thin blanket that I was tangled in off of me and crawled over to him, despite how much it hurt.
"I'm so sorry, Oliver," I whispered. He rested his hand on my leg.
"Why are you sorry?" he asked. He looked up at me. His eyes were bloodshot, and tears streamed down his face.
"Because I didn't try hard enough to get away," I whispered. He stared at me for a few seconds, not moving at all. Then, he carefully pulled me onto his lap, burrying his face in my hair. He sobbed softly.
"Brodie, you should never say sorry. It wasn't your fault. It was my fault. I should have never left you alone. I should have stayed with you. I never knew Tyler was so crazy. I'm so sorry Brodie. I'm so sorry," he sobbed. I clutched him tightly, sobbing right along with him.
"Hey hey now, Oli please don't blame yourself, please Oli! I'm okay, I'm alive! Please Oi, don't cry," I sobbed. I felt his hands travel up my hospital gown. His fingers traced my skin softly. I pulled away from his shoulder and looked up at him. Tears still streamed down his face.
"I thought I lost you," he whispered. I twisted my fingers though his hair. He pressed into my hand and closed his eyes.
"But you didn't. I'm still here," I whispered. His eyes flicked back open. I smiled at him. He leaned forward and kissed me softly. I pressed back into him, gripping his hair tighter.
"I really fucking thought I lost you Brodie. I dreamed that you were gone, and Marci was there, and she told me not to lose hope," he said. I pulled away from him.
"Marci was in your dream?" I asked. He raised his eye brow at me.
"Yes. She told me that I shouldn't lose hope, but I thought she meant something else," he said.
"That's really weird. When I was unconscious, I had a really weird dream. I think we were back in England, and I was wearing this really beautiful dress, and then, Marci was there. She told me that it was a place where people who still had hope came. She said she spent a lot of time there when she was really sick. It was so weird, but all so real Oli. She still smelled like peppermint tea. But she told me I still had hope left too," I said. I remembered how she placed her hands on my stomach. What she meant by doing that, I wasn't sure...
"Well maybe there really is something up there looking out for you, Brodie," he whispered. I pulled him back into a hug.
"Uh, not to ruin the moment, but I was wondering if maybe I could inturrupt," a voice from behind us said. I pulled back away from Oli. My face fell open. Standing in the door way were the last two people I ever expected to see.
"Cassie? Jona?" I whispered. Oli sprung from the bed, almost toppling me off the bed.
"What are you two doing here?" he spat.
"Oli! Stop!" I said. I carefully stood up from the bed, pulling my ivey with me. "Don't yell at them. They have just as much right to be here as you do," I said. He shot a look at me.
"But they left you!" he said. i shook my head.
"It doesn't matter what happened in the past. What matters is they are here now. And you're going to be nice to them," I said. I pulled Cassie into a tight hug, which she greatfully returned.
"Are you okay?" she whispered. I nodded and pulled away from her and stepped into Jona's arms, hugging him tightly.
"Yes, I'm fine. You know, just a minor set back in life," I said with a weak smile.
"We thought we lost you," Jona said quietly.
"Can't keep me down," I said.
"That stupid fuck Tyler is really going to get it," Cassie spat. I rested my hand on her shoulder.
"Tyler isn't in the quiestion anymore. He got caught. The police were just waiting for Brodie to wake up so she can testify against him," Oli said quietly.
"And that's just what I'll do. He'll go to prison where he belongs, right there with my brother," I said.
"And that's where he'll stay," Jona said quietly. He glanced over at Oli, who was sitting down on the bed with his head bowed. I raised an eye brow at him, but he ignored me. Instead, he walked over to Oli and sat down next to him.
"Oli," he said quietly. I leaned agaist Cassie. He fingers tangled through mine. I squeezed her hand tightly as we watched our two boys sitting together quietly.
"Oli, I'm really sorry about everything that happened in the past. You guys will always be my best mates," he said. I heard Oli let out a small grunt. I sighed heavily. I wished he wasn't being so rude. Jona made a big move coming here, and now he was trying to apologise.
"I really hope things work out for you in the future. That Jordan guy has a good head on him. I bet with his help, he'll being a whole new sound to the band. I really want things to get better for you," he said quietly.
"Yeah?" Oli said quietly.
"Yes, Oli. I still care about you guys," he said. Oli let out a small sniffle.
"Thanks, Jona," he said softly. Tears sprung into my eyes. The guys said nothing more, but it was all they needed.
"We can't stay, but I needed to come back and make sure you were okay," Cassie whispered. I nodded.
"I'm glar you're here," I said.
"You're still my best friend in the whole wide world," she said.
"I love you, Fish Face,"
"I love you too, Fish Face."
