1. Disparates

Why fit in when you were born to stand out? -Dr. Seuss

***

I took a deep breathe as I took a step. I was officially at student Green Brook high school. Not that it's a big deal, though.

"I hate high school." I muttered as I walked into the building. Tell me why my mother was making me transfer schools in the middle of the year. I don't know.

"Hey, this might be good for us. Start fresh. Who knows, Arden, this could be our greatest year yet." My best friend, also known as Ace chirped.

Luckily, I still had him. He convinced his dad that he should change schools with me.

I chuckled at Ace. "Always with the positivity." I shook my head at him. He turned to me and winked. His eyes glowed a bright yellow as he smiled at me and I smiled back.

Ace was a Disparate, just like me. We are not normal in the way you'd think.

Let me explain. A disparate is a 'person' who is different in kind. We contain elements that are different from one another. What I'm basically trying to say is that we all come from Greek mythology. Our parents are Greek gods, goddesses, or something related to the mythology.

Yeah it's a little weird , but it's real. It's all real.

My mother just happens to be Athena. She's the goddess of wisdom, strategy, and arts.

Us Disparates and our parents are to fit into modern day society. We age just like any other people. Disparates are sort of like Demi-gods or if you watch Percy Jackson, you can say we're half bloods, yes we can still die, but not easily. We can die of old age, so, we won't grow old to be like...1,000 years old.

It makes sense. See, if someone were to walk up to me and stab me in the chest, I wouldn't die.

Weird right, I know.

To the rest of the world, we are normal people. Just don't try to empty a load to our head. We won't die that easily.

Disparates do inherit most power from their parents. For example, my goofy best friend, Ace, is the son of Apollo. Apollo is the god of the sun, music, and poetry. Ace gains power when the sun is out and he can influence positivity on others.

"Let's go find the office," Ace said as he walked further into the building. "Where do you think it is?"

The office....

Usually the office is where the front doors are. If we entered through the side doors, they should be down further on our left.

"Arden." Ace plucked my forehead.

"Ow. What did I do?"

"Your eyes shifted. Do you know where the office is?" I nodded my head.

My eyes shifted, that means they glowed. Since I'm a descendent from Athena, my eyes shift when I or someone around me strategizes, shows true wisdom, or uses creative arts.

"Follow me." I told Ace. We continued down the hallway.

Students were just loitering by their lockers and talking. I'm pretty sure the first bell hasn't gone off yet.

As I led Ace through the hallways, I locked gazes with a girl with ginger hair. When she spotted Ace and I, she smiled and her eyes glowed a bright orange.
