Dean:
"Hey, hey, hey, what's that noise for?" I asked my little girl, scooping the three month old baby up out of the crib and dancing with her as I checked her diaper, wet, of course, and knew she must be hungry. So after a quick change, I took her with me into the kitchen, where I nuked a bottle of her moms milk, tested it on my arm, and then let her start to drink. "That's it, there we go, Ais. You're like me in the morning, like your dada, always hungry, that's it."
She finished and hiccuped a little, before I put the cloth over my shoulder and started to rub her back, patting in time with her heart, hearts, to get her to burp on my back, which I then mimicked, making her giggle at me. "Yeah, that's it, that's right, dada can do that too, yes he can, yes he can. Look at you, oh, my tiny little girl..."
Taking her with me into the library, giving her a teddy and some pieces of parchment to play with while she lay between some books on the table, I got to work with more of my research, letting her momma sleep in for a while as she'd been working hard, trying to beat me to all of the night feeds and changings. She flinched, if she wasn't ready for me to touch her, and I felt like she didn't want me alone with her. I wouldn't hurt her, I couldn't, not this tiny little ray of sunlight...
"Hey. We good?" Sammy asked, coming into the library, kissing his niece's head as she beamed up at him with a toothless grin. Teething was coming up, and I was fully prepared with teething rings in the freezer, ice pops, and that gel you were supposed to rub along their gums. I was going to ace this. "Morning, hello there, yes, I'm talking to you, yes." And now he was shaking her above his head, only ten minutes into her having eaten, so I counted down from three, and she spat up the milk on him. "You knew that was gonna happen!"
I just gave him a thumbs up, while secretly loving my little girl even more for that. "Aces. Yeah, I love the smell of parchment in the morning. Ais seems to like it."
He still smiled at her, helping me start to mop her up. "She's a baby, she likes everything. How much lore is even left? We've got nothing on the Mark?"
You seemed to think that I had any semblance of an idea, dude. "Right? You'd think these eggheads, with all the crap they amassed over the years, would have actually collected something important. Uh, here. "He-wolf/She-Wolf: A Study in Werewolf Transgenderism." 600 pages, volume 1. But, uh, not something important, like -- I don't know -- maybe the oldest symbol known to man. That's not worth our time. It's not weird enough. I'm thinking about asking Khalilah to freaking go back in time!"
"Khalilah can't time travel, idiot." Said person was now walking into the library, looking exhausted as she started to guzzle coffee, hair up in a scruffy bun and in a pair of my shorts and shirts. "I don't know what happened, um, when I was trying to get away, but that wasn't me. God maybe, he helps me occasionally. Did you change and feed her?"
"Yeah, she was enjoying me singing Highway to Hell too much to wriggle didn't you my little sunshine?" I asked her, reaching across to grab her foot and she giggled a little, eating her hand sleepily. "She is going to have the best choice in music, Kali Kat." She flinched a little at that, trying to hide it by shivering, pulling my dressing gown further around herself. "Hey, you ok?"
She nodded, pulling Aisling onto her lap and cuddled her to sleep instantly, and then just stroked her cheeks softly. There was a devotion in love in her eyes that I had never seen before then, that I vaguely remembered from my mom when she was looking at me or Sammy all those years ago. There was no stronger love than a mother's for her child, and what she didn't realise was that she actually died having her.
Kali told me about what happened, she was considered dead for 6 minutes. 6 minutes was enough for God and a tattoo gun, apparently, because on the back of her neck she now had the black and white side of Ais' Yin and Yang sign. Weird as she was the Angel in the Daughter of Heaven and Hell equation.
