Khalilah:
"Keep your guard up, come on." Auntie Ashildr told me, helping me with my fighting. I always trained, or was studying, for as long as I could remember. "You need to keep your guard up, Khalilah. Other people will take advantage of that."
I blocked her next punch, ducking the kick and punched her squarely in the lower back, sending her tumbling to the ground. "It's called entrapment, Aunt Ash." I told her, breathing hard as I then helped her back to her feet. "Make them think you have a weakness, wait for them to try and exploit it, before exploiting how open they leave themselves while attacking."
She nodded at me, grabbing two sparring sticks, throwing one to me. "Good. You're learning tactics, that's the sign you're almost ready for anything." Why did I need to be ready for anything? "OK. Next training session. Ready, go."
Then she went to hit me with it but I bent backwards quickly, before rolling to the side, managing to hit her hard in the back of the leg but she twisted after, going to hit me, but I managed to get my own in the way and it hit hard with a jolt of pain up my arms. My vision glazed for a moment, and I saw what her next move was, so I moved in the opposite direction, elbowing her in the solar plexus, my long blonde pony tail whipping the air as I used my momentum to grab her and twist her to the floor, holding the stick to her throat.
"Very well done." She nodded as I let her up after a moment, when she realised that she was totally pinned, her sparring stick under my knee where she couldn't lift it. "You've mastered how to keep moving through a vision, using it to your advantage, Lilah."
"Yeah, well, it was that or end up with another broken nose." I snapped at her with annoyance lacing my voice, throwing away the stick, wiping my face with the towel I always had during training sessions. "Are we done?"
Aunt Ash frowned at me as I downed half my water bottle. "Khalilah, you've been getting more and more aggressive every day since you were 14."
Yeah, wonder why that was. "Because I've been trained to fight since I was 5 years old, and maybe for once I'd like a bloody day off."
"You know that you're learning to fight for self defence, same with your knowledge of everything else, the physics, chemistry, the mythological studies." She sighed, rubbing her eyes wearily as I heard grumps walking through the TARDIS, playing his guitar. He was always playing it, and I wished that I got to properly learn how to play ukulele. "Lilah, we know that you get pushed, a lot, be we're seriously all here for you."
That was very obvious, like how you weren't ever going to tell me why the hell I had more training than Batman. I got left alone to sleep and that was it, and I had to get up early all the time, for my overly healthy breakfast, and then running a set route between the two TARDIS', swimming for half an hour, before sitting for an hour with grumps and dad, learning about different types of demons, eating salad for lunch with a fruit smoothie. I missed being a kid, when I could eat whatever the hell I wanted. I missed pie, so goddamn much!
"Whatever. I'm going to cool down in the pool, tell mum and dad where I'll be." I told her, walking out of the room, heading towards the pool, but ducked into a side room on the right, throwing myself down on my little den, sealing the door behind me. They taught me how to create perception filters, I was going to use them to my advantage. I picked up my ukulele, looking at the book of chords in front of me, and tried to strum.
I'd done this for a while, tried to get about an hour to myself, to just try and learn what I'd wanted to since I was 3 years old. It was difficult, not having anyone to actually teach me, but they were trying to prep me for something I had no idea about, something about a time travel story to rival terminator, only involving demons. After about 20 minutes, I gave up and just lay on the pillows, staring at my stolen tablet. I'd been watching every series of Arrow, Flash and Sense8, very slowly, in episode bursts, until my proximity alarm told me that dad was on his way to the pool.
