"Why are you calling me?" I laughed.

"I just got out of practice and I was wondering how you were doing" I could just imagine his smile on the other side of the line.

"That's nice of you" I said as I held the phone between my shoulder and ear.

"I know"

"Oh shut up" I rolled my eyes.

"So what's been happening?"

"Nothing, just uhm...home" I said as I sat on my bed and played with the bracelets on my wrists.

"Fun"

"You know it" I replied.

"I thought you played volleyball" he randomly said to change the topic and induce a conversation.

"I do" I replied "it is just that the season has been over"

"Well that's good. You could focus on grades and more important things," his small talk comforted me since I had been alone for the past 3 days.

"Hey! Come and help me pick up the locker room," said a voice in the background.

"I guess you have to go," I told him.

"We could talk a bit longer if you want,"

"No no, its fine. Thanks for calling, it means a lot" I said honestly.

"Why, what's-" he stopped himself before finishing his own sentence.

The phone call was a nice touch, but I didn't want him to get a different idea. He was a great friend, and that was all I wanted, a friend. Him asking what was wrong and getting into a deeper conversation would be a stretch ... yet I didn't mind. He just wanted to be benevolent and had good intentions.

"Its fine," I said before inhaling deeply then releasing, "Maya and I had a big fight while Ryan and I aren't talking"

"When did all that happen?" He broadly asked.

"Yesterday," I sighed "we aren't friends anymore" my eyes watered at the memory, but I tried pushing it back.

"I don't need you!"

"Oh I'm sorry" his caring voice was true.

"Its fine, it's not like we have been best friends for 12 years, right?" I released a sarcastic and forced laugh to lighten the mood.

"Kristen, people change, we grow up. It will be fine"

"Stop acting like it ever meant anything to you"

"She said I never even cared about her" I sniffled while sitting on my bed.

He didn't reply, not knowing what to say.

"Anyways" I rubbed my eyes "I'll save you my sob story. You have to go"

"It doesn't bother me," he said "I do have to go, though. It will all be okay. Just remember smile"

A small smile grew on my face "see you later, Jake"

"Bye," he chuckled before I hung up.

It was nice of him to call me. I haven't seen him since Monday, when Ryan told him I would probably barf all over him. That was a great thing to say...

I leaned over and plugged my phone into the charger before snuggling under the covers. It was early, but a nap sounded like a good choice before hitting the books and diving into my pile of homework.
