It was the night before my wedding that they took over. I was marrying Harold, that disgusting twit with the nose of a Proboscis Monkey. My parents arranged it, because they didn’t approve of the man who I was in love with, Drey.
I met Drey at the post office, the day I started planning to run away, he told me a story from someone called Shakespeare. The story was about two different races, a man from one and a woman from the other fell in love and the whole story was about suspicion, jealousy and racism. I had no idea why this stranger was telling me this story. I knew have found out why he told me the story of Othello.
We got closer and eventually he persuaded me to let him come when I ran away, we had a plan, it was fool proof. Then my parents found me with Drey, and when I say ‘with him’ I don’t mean kissing and cuddling, I mean drawing on a map our escape route. They placed on house arrest and forced me to marry Harold, the mayor’s nephew. It was the night before, and I was being fitted in my wedding dress when they came. The Robo, robots made from an alien race, apparently they turned evil and wiped the whole race on the planet they were created on, talk about gratitude. They figured that one planet wasn’t enough for them so they came to ours.
Drey and I tried to run away, it all happened in that one night, we were too quick, too rash, if we had just waited then things that happened wouldn’t of happened. Drey would still be alive and I wouldn’t be lying on the floor with a bullet wound in my leg.
I’d just jumped for The Border and some mad man thought it would be funny to pull out his rifle and shoot the girl jumping over The Border, thus resulting in me lying on the floor with a bullet in my thigh. At least I’d made it over. All I needed to do now was get out of the open and wait for my unnecessarily inflicted wound to heal. But for now, I’ll just rest.
Waking up I see that it’s night time. Damn it! Anything could’ve grabbed me out here in the open! If I’m going to stay hidden and alive, I should probably stay away from sleeping in the open. I can tell my wound’s not yet healed but it’s starting to scab. I need to find a safe house, so I must set to the streets of whatever town was closest.
Paris. I’ve always wanted to come here since I was a little girl, my daddy used to tell me stories of his times in Paris, all the masked balls and the shimmering lakes, the dresses and bow ties. He made it sound so glamorous, I’d say to him,
“Daddy, one day I’m going to walk the shiny streets of Paris in a big poofy dress.” And he’d reply.
“Yes you will, but when you do don’t forget to hold your head high.”
“I won’t daddy.” I’d smile and then I’d fall asleep. Now look at me, walking along the rubbish ridden, dump like streets of Paris in old, ripped clothes and a blood crusted wound in my leg, but I still hear my daddy’s words and I hold my head up high. I limp down the street, looking for safe houses, but the choice is so wide, almost all these houses are uninhabited. I look to my right and see a big house that looks in the best condition of them all, but it’s hard to tell at this time of night. Oh what the hell! I’m going in!
I limp through a hallway into what looks like the living room, but it’s empty save a two chairs. I strip down to my singlet and underwear and I fall against a corner and let my eyes fall with me.
I dream of the wheat fields behind the town, that’s where I used to go when I wanted to be alone and with my thoughts, but tonight, in my dreams I was there with a million Robo and this big dragon thing, it’s me against them. The dragon is massive and entirely made out of a black metal tinted emerald green, the fire coming out of its mouth comes out in boxes and could swallow a person whole, I’m at the moment that person. I suddenly feel a hand on my shoulder and I’m snapped awake. The sun has just started to come up but my eyes can’t focus, I turn my head in front of me and I see a dark blur. I think it starts to talk to me but I’m too tired, I mumble at it to leave me alone and I fall back asleep.
“She needs to wake up.”
“Why?”
“Because she can’t stay here.”
“Why?”
“Because she could kill us.”
“Why would she kill us?”
“She has to go! Keeping you alive is enough!”
“Says the woman who hid behind the pillar.”
“That was camouflaging.”
“That was the lamest excuse ever.”
“She’s awake.”
“I could tell, hello ma’am, I hope you slept well.”
“What are you doing here? Who are you?”
“We’re your neighbours!”
