“Don’t be an idiot.” I hear Theo say to me before we go in and stop the human riot happening in front of us.

“Right back at ya Gun Wrong-Way.” There’s a story behind that name, Theo once went to shoot someone but had his gun the wrong way around and shot the door behind him instead. The person he was trying to shoot died of laughter, well; I strangled them as they laughed. Same thing.

Theo pulls a sour face and marches past me in a huff. I laugh to myself and follow him. I’m instantly being shot at and I shoot back, just another day at work.

Lucas’ POV

“What is that noise?!” I yell, blocking my eyes from a horrific noise coming from the room where my team work.

“It’s the radio-wave blocker.” Spencer explains once he turns it off.

“I call it the ‘enough to make me deafer than my grandmother’.” E quips

“I’m working on making it undetectable to human ears.”

“Well, you might need to keep working.” I pat Spencer on the shoulder and walk over to EK.

“Hey EK?” I crouch down next to her as Spencer, E and the other guy’s work on.

“Yeah?” She says uncommitted without taking her eyes off a book.

“What book are you reading?” I crane my neck to see the front cover.

“A Dummies Guide to Becoming a Ninja?” I ask looking at her.

“I couldn’t find a spy one.” She looks at me and we both start laughing. Once we’ve both stopped I ask EK what I actually came here to ask.

“Wanna go on a mission with me?” She looks up at me with wide eyes.

“Really? But I’m not ready, Magna said,” I cut her off.

“Magna said you were okay to go, it’s only a recon. We’ll just be watching something happen, no interfering.” EK jumps up and puts the book down on a counter as she quickly walks out the door.

“I’ll meet you at the front!” She calls over her shoulder. I walk over to Spencer and E and lean against the bench there.

“She’s kinda hot you know.” E says as we watch her hurry around a corner.

“She’s about a year or two younger than you man.” One of our other teammates, Keeli says matter of factly.

“I know, but she is.”

“She is.” Spencer says almost dreamily. E then wolf-whistles earning a slap by Spencer.

“Back to work guys, EK and I’ll be back soon. Locky, you’re in charge.” We all look over to the second oldest asleep in a chair.

“Maybe not then, E.” He nods at me and I go out to meet EK.

_

“So, what’s happening?” EK asks me as I drive to our mission.

“A riot.”

“That was descriptive Lukey boy, I’m surprised you didn’t run out of breath.”

“There’s nothing else to say. There’s a riot, Robo have gone in to stop it, and we’re going to watch it. End of story.”

“Are you always this grumpy before missions?”

“Grumpy? No. Focused? Yes. Just like you should be.” And with that EK huffs but goes silent thankfully.

Mika’s POV

The humans are nearly all gone, dead or retreated. I’m turning around to shoot my next victim when I see a foreign car sitting on the next street over. I indicate to Leo that I’ve gone to check it out. He nods and goes back to fighting.

I jump over a small wall and with silent feet slink over to the car. When I find it’s unoccupied I stand around thinking and confused. Whose car is this? I hear a gasp and turn sharply, going into a defensive crouch. I look around and right ahead of me I see a pair of eyes. It’s no ordinary pair of eyes; these eyes are familiar. They’re bluey-grey and have a look of shock and hope in them. I stand up to go find the person who these eyes belong to but I don’t get the chance to.

“MIKA! RAST HAS BEEN HIT!” It’s Leo. I look back to the bush and the eyes are gone, so is the car.

Lucas’ POV

“Whoa Lucas! Slow down!” EK has to clutch the dashboard as I speed up to the White House. I’m not thinking straight and once the car’s parked I get out, slam the door and don’t look back as I hear EK get out slowly.

Spencer’s POV

“Hey Lucas, wanna see,”

“Not now!” He snaps in response and storms right past me. Whoa, what’s up with him? Then I see EK looking after Lucas unsurely.

“EK!” I call; she looks at me with relief. I walk to her and she meets me halfway.

“What happened?” I ask as we walk back to our project room.

“I don’t know, we were hiding in the bush just watching rioting humans being smashed by Robo and their loyalists when all of a sudden one of them turns to us.”

“A Robo?” I ask as we turn into the room where E joins the conversation.

“Did you come across one? Did you have to kill it? I bet Lucas didn’t let you. Did he kill it?” E asks excitedly. This kid is so weird. We stand next to a bench.

“No, we watched a whole load kill people though.” EK replies then turns to me.

“Isn’t wasn’t a Robo. It was a loyalist, she was fighting with the Robo.”

“What was she like?” E asks, I bet he has dreams about good-looking girls fighting with Robo.

“She was very comfortable in combat, looked evil and had bright red hair.”

Bright red hair.

EK continues to explain what happened but I’m not listening. Bright red hair, looked comfortable in combat. Red hair; red hair.

“Hey Spence? Are you okay mate?” E asks concerned.

“Let’s sit him down. He looks like he’s in shock.” EK helps me onto the bench and sits patiently next to me.

“You know who she is?” She asks softly. All I can do is nod.

“So did Lucas?” I nod again.

“Her?” E whispers to himself catching onto my thinking.

“Who is it?” EK asks him.

“It’s the girl they lived with, Lucas’ girlfriend who was taken from Robo at least 3 years ago. You see him watching the news?” EK nods.

“He’s been looking for her, they announce all the dead people per day, and he’s been waiting for her face to appear. When he saw her today, alive and fighting with Robo. Man, it must have hurt him so bad.”

EK looks at me pitifully.

“You loved her like a sister?” I nod and a single tear rolls down my cheek. EK grabs my hand and rests her head on my shoulder whilst E puts a firm reassuring hand on my other shoulder.

Red hair.
