Mika’s POV
When Lucas left us three, Sparrow immediately attacked me.
“What’s wrong with you, Mika?” Spencer and I look up startled, how dare she talk to me like that.
“Nothing’s wrong with me kiddo, it’s you that’s messed up.” I shrug, Spencer gasps at how I talked to her but Sparrow’s glaring at me in evil delight. Those two words go well together and they describe Sparrow perfectly! Evil Delight.
“Then why do you deny any feelings for Lucas?” Okay, that’s where this conversation ends.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about little girl so just stay out of my way and I’ll stay out of yours.” That’s not a bad deal; hopefully she’ll accept that and shut the hell up.
“No, I need to keep an eye on you.” She shoots daggers at me through her eyes. She’s 14 and she’s saying she needs to keep an eye on me! What the hell is wrong with this child? I look at Spencer for help but he just looks down at the table, avoiding my gaze. Spencer? Great now this little bitch has turned even Spencer against me!
“Fine, do what you want Sparrow, but if you’re here then I can’t be.” I stand up. This is only a bluff, I hope that once Spencer realises that I’m going to leave he would finally see some sense and tell Sparrow to back off. But no. He just continues to look at the table and that hurts me more than it should. I’ve been through thick and thin with him, I’ve saved his life and he still decides to go with this little girl who he just met and barely knows! Sparrow knows my plans and looks at me with a smug smile.
I sigh and walk out the kitchen away from them, away from her. I go through the living room, the place where I nearly kissed Lucas a few minutes ago, and I reach the front door. I look behind me, knowing that I’ll most probably never see them again. Lucas, I didn’t even say goodbye. I know that this is a drastic measure just for some annoying 14 year old but one thing I haven’t told you is that I know who she is, or more like what she is, I’ve known what she is since I saw her without blood on her face. And I can’t bring myself to tell them; it’ll break Spencer’s heart, if she doesn’t eat it first. Ask yourself this, if her mother had bled out in front of her, then where was the body? With that last thought, I turn to the open door and step outside into the rabid streets of New York.
Lucas’s POV
“Spencer? Where’s Mika?” I don’t get any response; he’d staring at that table like it’s the most interesting thing he’s ever seen. Fine, he’s not going to answer me. I sigh and sit down on the chair Mika had disappeared from. We sit in silence, still and awkward. I think about all the possibilities, she could just be in her room or she could’ve gone on a solo raid, or even just for a walk! But none of them explain why Spencer’s acting strange. Oh god, if something’s happened to her, I’m gonna,
“She’s gone.” Spencer whispers from the other side of the table. Gone?
“Gone? As in?” There are two meanings to gone and neither of them I like.
“She left.” At those words my minds starts whirring, why did she leave? What could’ve made her leave? And why did she leave without saying goodbye to me? Mika would only leave like that if something were weighing on her mind, or someone. I look at Sparrow. I knew Mika hated her but I didn’t think she hated her enough to leave us.
“What did you do?” I whisper, scared of the answer.
“We don’t know, she just started yelling and stuff and then left, I think she’s gone mad.” Gone mad?! How dare this kid say that about Mika! Mika’s the most logical person I know! Something must’ve pushed her over the line, was it me? Was it that we nearly kissed? I know she didn’t like being attached to something; did the fact that she couldn’t bear to lose us make her leave? Whatever the reason, it wasn’t because she went mad. I need to go get her.
I abruptly stand up and walk over to Sparrow who still has that ‘I’ve won’ look on her face. I grab her arm tightly and glare right into her eyes. She shrinks away and Spencer tries to stop me but he somehow can’t. I put my face close to Sparrows so I’m that bit more intimidating, so she can see my anger and rage.
“I’m going to find her and I will come back with her, and when I do. You’re gonna have some explaining to do.” I let go and turn away, running to the door and out onto the undesired streets of New York’s remains.
Spencer’s POV
I feel trapped.
Like the energy is being sucked out of me.
Mika’s gone.
And I didn’t stop her.
Why didn’t I stop her?
Lucas just left.
Why didn’t I stop him?
Sparrow is walking away.
Why can’t I stop her?
I feel glued to this chair.
I can’t move.
What’s happening to me?
Am I sick?
I’m scared.
Lucas’s POV
“Mika!” I’m running around looking for her, screaming her name.
“Mika!” I yell as I come to a stop on a corner.
“Shut up!” Someone behind me spits. I turn around and find a woman in her late 50’s. She’s wrapped tightly in a ripped blanket and she’s a mess.
“They’ll hear you.” She spits at me again. I crouch down to come eye level with her.
“Who’ll hear me?” I ask, she looks at me like I’m stupid.
“You’re not from around here are you boy?” I shake my head and she sighs.
“There are these things here, they look like humans, they sound like humans, and on the outside they are human. But they’re not, they’re animals, a race made and bred in Robo labs. They’re spies and they’ll stop at nothing to please their masters.” She shudders.
“What else?” I can tell she hasn’t said everything she needs to. She looks at me like she’s seeing me for the first time again. Then she leans in closer.
“They eat us, they’ll rip the flesh off your body whilst you’re alive and screaming and they’ll eat your insides, relishing in your screams. They seem like innocent humans, trying to survive, but they aren’t. If you know one, then run, run, run you silly boy!” I stand up, hearing enough and as I walk away she yells after me.
“Run you silly boy! Just run!” I ignore her and continue walking. A few seconds later a scream echoes throughout the streets. That’s when I run.
