Lucas’s POV
“What’s on your mind son? Magna-Jean asks me as she sits across from me.
“I’ve been having these dreams.”
“Dreams of what?”
“Of Mika.” Magna doesn’t flinch, and if she’s at all surprised she doesn’t show it.
“What’s she doing?” Magna picks up her knitting and starts the needles in and out of the fabric. She’s not being rude; it’s actually her way of thinking, so I know she’s listening.
“She’s back with us, in Paris and we’re being chased by Robo. We’re all running down the street, Mika’s in front of Spencer and I and bullets fly past us.” As I speak, last nights dream comes back to me. I continue telling Magna about my dream as she knits.
We’re in a different house now, Sparrow dying set off some sort of alarm and the Robo knew where we were. Magna, Spencer and I aren’t in New York anymore, we moved to Washington D.C. Magna wanted to leave America but I wouldn’t, Mika might come back and if we weren’t in America then she would have a harder time trying to find us. It’s been two weeks, two weeks and still no clue as to where she is or how she is.
“Lucas?” Magna is staring at me intently; I must’ve stopped talking. She sees something in my eyes, which makes her soften. She puts a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
“She’ll come back Lucas.”
“How do you know that?” I ask disbelieving.
“Because you’ll do anything to make sure it happens.” And with that the conversation ends. I nod and stand up whilst Magna goes back to her knitting. I walk into the living room and sit on the couch next to Spencer. We got lucky with this new house; it still has working electricity and a TV so Spencer has been glued to the thing since we got here!
“You know what I don’t get.” Spencer says still looking at the weird bananas - that seem to be wearing pyjamas - on the screen. I look at him.
“What?”
“Why did Sparrow have to kill me? Why did she wait all that time when she could’ve just killed when we saw her in that room?” He has a good point.
“Maybe she was told to kill you?” I’m trying my hardest to think of a logical answer to that question but I’m coming up short.
“But who would want me dead? And why did she target just me? I mean, she poisoned you and all but she wasn’t planning to, the look in her eyes when you came in told me she wasn’t planning on killing you, she was going to kill me Lucas.” Spencer looks at me with so much fear and confusion in his eyes I can’t stop myself from placing a reassuring hand on his arm.
“I don’t know Spencer, I don’t know. But I have a feeling we’re gonna find out soon.” With that Spencer puts his head on my shoulder and we continue to watch the bananas.
More questions swirl in my head. Like, why did the Robo take Mika? What do they want with her? And when they were taking her, why didn’t the Robo just kill me? Robo do that, if you’re in their way they’re going to kill you, but not me. And all for Mika, why?
Mika’s POV
How long has it been?
How long have I been observed and watched?
When will I be able to leave?
Will I ever leave?
Who wants me here and why?
How are Lucas and Spence?
Where are they now?
I miss them.
The door starts opening. Great, another food delivery. This Robo has a habit of leaving the food at the door, which means I have to walk all the way from my bed to the door. The door clicks open.
“Put the food somewhere I can reach this time!” I yell before looking at the door. I see the shoes first; it’s the woman. I look up and finally lay eyes on her face. No.
“Juliette?” She smiles cruelly.
“Hello Mika.” And the door closes.
Spencer’s POV
Lucas and I watch the amusing bananas in pyjamas, until the TV glitches and goes black, at the same time the lights flicker off.
“Looks like the electricity has finally run out.” Lucas stands up and goes to grab a lighter to light the candles on the table. I watch him as he walks to his room. He’s changed; losing Mika was quite a blow in the gut for him so to speak. He used to walk with confidence and pride, now that’s gone and has been replaced with a growing hurt and a faded hope. It’s horrible to see him like this, he used to smile and laugh but now he’s all sentimental and. Sad.
Lucas’s POV
I walk to my room to grab a lighter; I knew the electricity would run out so I came prepared. By prepared I mean I grabbed a lighter off the street; I just hope it works. I walk over to my bedroom window and flick the lighter. Hallelujah, it works! As the flame flickers I look out the window. Shit.
“Spencer! Magna! Grab as much as you can! We’re leaving!” I yell as I run out the room and into the main living area where Spencer’s standing around looking confused and Magna who’s wasted no time and is grabbing blankets and backpacks.
“What’s happening? Are the Robo here again?” Spencer asks scared. I point to the window as I grab food. Spencer looks outside and his eyes widen.
“Go get our stuff from our rooms! And be quick!” I tell him, he doesn’t move.
“Spencer! Go!” He looks at me, shocked and shakes his head like coming out of a trance. I move my head to the direction of our rooms and he quickly scurries off after Magna gives him a backpack to put everything in.
I guess I should explain what’s outside. Spencer thought it was Robo, and he’s right. But it’s not just the usual small party of Robo that are following us. It’s about at least a third of the whole bloody army! So that’s at least a few hundred Robo if not a thousand, plus at least fifteen of those Sparrow monsters on leashes. Then add on the twenty or so Robo Birds, which are like fighter planes but shinier. And deadlier. They haven’t come to flush us out, they’ve come to either kill us or take us away to torture us.
Spencer comes back with a bursting backpack on his back. Magna then walks in with two full backpacks and I have my other two. Spencer takes one of Magna’s packs and we all head for the back door. Once out we all silently run away from the oncoming legion. And as we run I remember something totally irrelevant but seems like a big thing now.
I left the lighter on the bedroom floor, where I dropped it.
