“We need to go now!” Excuse me, trying to sleep here.
“Spencer, get Mika up!” No don’t.
“I’ll go!” You’ll leave.
“Mika?” Go away Spencer.
“You really need to wake up now.” Give me one good reason.
“Juliette’s missing and Robo’s are coming towards us!” I’ll take the last one, fine; I’ll get up then.
“Let me off the table then.” I growl as I open my eyes and start to sit up but Spencer pushes me down.
“You shouldn’t be getting up, your wound hasn’t healed enough for you to be walking around.”
“How’s my chest going to affect my walking?” I challenge.
“In more ways than you realise.”
“So, am I getting up or not?” He said we were in a hurry, and that Robo were coming towards us, well at this rate, we’re not going anywhere, well I’m not.
“Not, Lucas!” Spencer calls out to Lucas who, from what I can hear is gathering rations and possessions. My photo frame! I have to get up!
“I have to get up Spencer, there’s something I need!” I try to sit up again but Spencer pushes me down and keeps his hand on my shoulder.
“What?” A flustered and hurried Lucas rushes into the doorway of the dining room. His hair’s a mess; it still looks hot though.
“Mika needs carrying, she can’t walk by herself.” I don’t think so Joe. I hit Spencer’s hand away and fling myself up; I throw my legs over the side of the table and put my feet on the floor. I last about two triumphant seconds before crumbling to the floor. Lucas jumps forwards and catches me. He looks up at Spencer.
“Go put everything in the car, and be quick.” Spencer nods then runs out the room. As he does he smiles at me smugly.
Mika, one, Spencer, one. It’s one all mate.
“Come on Mika, let’s get you to the car.” Lucas says softly as he puts one arm under my knees and the other supporting my neck. I don’t bother struggling. Then he starts towards the front door, what about my daddy?
“Lucas, there’s something I need.” I say urgently, he keeps walking.
“What is it?” he asks hurriedly.
“It’s in my room.” I twist in his arms and point behind his back. He shakes his head.
“We don’t have time, the Robo are closing in, they’ll be here in about ten minutes. Ten minutes is plenty of time, actually, now I think about it, it’s not.
“But I can’t leave him behind!” I raise my voice slightly; acting like a child I wriggle in his arms and reach out to my room. Keep doing that Mika and the room will come to you, seriously woman, put your arms down.
“Him?” Lucas tenses, now is not the time for emotions Lucas. Says the girl refusing to leave behind a picture of her dead father. I spot a shadow run across the hall, Spencer. I go to yell at him to get the photo but just as I open my mouth an explosion goes off just next to the house, a grenade, and a lousy shot.
“I’m sorry Mika, but whoever it is, we have to leave him.” Lucas says, “Now get ready, I’m going to run to the car.” I nod and cling on tightly.
“LET’S GO SPENCER!” He yells before running out the door. Adrenaline rushes through me as Lucas runs across the afternoon sun lit street and to the car, somewhere I hear someone yell and bullets start to fly past us. Lucas bends his head over my stomach and I tighten my grip on his neck.
“It’s ok,” I hear Lucas whisper to me, panting.
“I know.” I look up at his face and see him looking at the road ahead. The look on his face is pure concentration, have I told you he’s very good looking? Not that I like him or anything, as far as the ‘like’ goes is I like to look at him. We reach the car and Lucas pulls open the door, making a barrier between the Robo and us as he lies me down in the back seat. Once I’m in and comfy Lucas ducks behind the door, the back of his head just inches away from my toes. He stays there until we see Spencer run out. Lucas jumps into action. He opens the passenger door whilst closing mine, he runs to the driver’s side and start the car. As soon as Spencer’s butt touches the car seat Lucas drives off, leaving the Robo on our tail.
“That was intense man.” Spencer breathes. Lucas manages a short breathless laugh and Spencer looks around to look at me in the back seat. He smiles when he sees me watching him and turns back.
“Lucas? What are we going to do about Ju?” Spencer asks, we’ve been driving for about an hour now, we lost the Robo about five miles back, they just turned around and left. Strange, I know. Robo are known to end the chase with a kill, not a retreat. What made them do that?
“I don’t know.” Lucas replies, I think he just answered both our questions. I decide that we’re not going to stop anytime soon so I might as well rest. I close my eyes, but not before I see the look Lucas gives me in the rear view mirror. His eyes are saying to me, who are you? To repeat your words Lucas Knight, I don’t know anymore.
