Chapter 34

While waiting for a text from Larry to know who's been behind the fake texting I take Selena's phone and add my number to her contacts.

The joy in her eyes is pure. It warms my heart.

She and Christian started a conversation about an incident in the chemistry lab and I just sit quietly to follow their conversation.

"Why Selena" I ask after a short period of silence.

"Wh..why what?"

"Why do so much for someone's friendship, when you could get tons of others. Why the desperation?"

I keep my voice soft and nice enough so I don't scare her. She stays silent for a while, but I don't push for the answer. We all sit in silence, before she starts talking.

"I uuh... I don't think I can give you the explanation you're looking for. But you're a very special person to me and you inspire me in a way nobody else has. That's probably not enough reason to be this desperate and go over the top, but I do it anyway. You'd be surprised what I can do to get something I really want. After all, I'm my mother's daughter"

She doesn't look at me or Christian as she talks.

"I'm honored to know that I mean something to you, but It's still creepy; you know" I say.

"I know. It's not like anyone wants to be my friend. I'm like the outcast in school. It's been like that forever. You care for your friends and you love protecting them. You stand up for them. Everybody knows that if they mess with your friends, they mess with you. I think for once I wanted to have that in my life too. Someone other than my mom to care for me and....be there for me. I guess I was looking for your friendship, but in the wrong way"

"I know what you mean" I say and I mean it.

I've also been looking for the answers to my questions in the wrong way. I did all the wrong things and lashed my anger out on the wrong people. So I know how it feels like.

Christian's phone breaks the silence when a message comes in. We turn to look at each other, knowing that it must be Larry.

Christian looks at the screen and all he says is "Delanxy"

I should have known it was her. I don't get why she'd want to do something so stupid.

Selena's head snaps up and asks "Did you just say Delanxy? As in your friend Delanxy?"

"Yep. The same one we both know" I answer casually.

"And you're so chill about it? I understand if she wanted to hurt me, but I thought you guys were friends. Why would she do something like that?"

"I really don't care. Just forget it. I'll handle it later"

"Jamal just texted me asking if we wanna hang out. Do you guys want to go?" Christian asks.

"I don't know. What time is it?"

"3:45pm. You still have enough time for..."

It's kind of weird to me that the guy I've had the most intimate relationship with is okay with me dating someone else. I still have to get used to the unfamiliar feeling of going out with someone other than Christian.

"Uum... Alright then. Selena you coming?" I asks.

She hesitates for a second, but agrees to go with us anyway.

We carpool in Christian's car to McDonald where we meet the rest of the group.

I was hoping Delanxy would have the audacity to be here, but I guess she doesn't.

When we arrived and and Gabrielle saw that Selena was with us, she just said to her
"I don't know how you and Chan happened, but I still don't like you. I'm just letting you know. I really don't like you... I don't mind you sitting with us and all, but I still don't like you"

"Okay cool. Thanks for letting me know I guess. You're not the first and you definitely won't be the last to say that" Selena shrugs.

I just look at the two and remain silent, not wanting to be a part of any of that.

Time flies by fast as we chat about a lot of stuff and laugh together. We were making too much noise in McDonald so they asked us to be quiet or leave.

We ended up leaving cause being quiet was not going to work at all.

Now were on the public playground that is meant for children, but who cares?

I stand up and walk to the bathroom leaving the group.

On my way there a girl who is busy typing away on her phone bumps into me, nearly knocking me off balance.

"Are you fucking mad!? Can't watch where you're going?" I snap, startling her.

"I..I'm s..." She stutters, but I cut her off.

"Save it. Now move out of my way"

"Um I..." She tries again, but I don't want to hear any of it.

"I said..!"

"Yelle! What are you doing?" Christian yells from behind me. He turns toward the girl and says "I'm sorry on her behalf. You can go"

She nods in appreciation and quickly walks away.

"What is it? You were doing so good at not being grumpy all the time" states Christian.

"She should watch where she's going. Who texts and walks?"

"Says the person who texts while driving"

"Whatever. I need to pee"

He smiles and shakes his head. "I'll wait here"

After I do my business in the bathroom I walk back to Christian who's waiting for me.

"Yelle. Did you notice anything today?.. In our group?"

"Um.. Not really. Except for Justin being all over Selena. Why?" I shrug.

"Exactly. I thought I was the only one who noticed. Don't you think they'd make a great couple?"

I look ahead of me where the whole group is seated in the grass. Including Selena and Justin who seem to be in a deep conversation.

"Yeah...yeah they might"

Looks like Justin might have a little thing for Selena.
