I ran through the streets, holding on to the crinkled bag of fruits. There were people everywhere and I bounded through the streets, dodging people as I pass. There weren’t as much people in Junrinan as before.

“Get her!” Someone cried behind me. “She stole our fruits from our shop.” People started to stare as I dashed pass. I passed small huts and children. I glanced up. The sky was bright blue, and there are hardly any clouds. I saw big green trees ahead. I started to run even harder. I stepped into the covering of the trees. The sky was no longer to be seen. I didn’t stop running in case they were still behind me. Damn shopkeepers, always have to make a spectacle of a little bit of theft. Junrinan’s going desperate. Shopkeepers are on the verge of going mad. Did they know what I was stealing for? What if I told them that I was stealing this for a bunch of starving orphans? I doubt they’ll change their mind.

I saw a clearing up ahead. I instantly stopped running and strolled to it. I felt a force in my body that threw me of my feet. I gasped and immediately stood up. My eyes darted here and there. There were no sign of anything. Relieved, I stepped towards the clearing.

As I got closer, I started to catch sight of a big hut-like building. I heard chattering of children inside it.

I approached it steadily and knocked on the door twice. It slowly opened revealing a pretty blonde girl in a blue kimono. She had a narrow face, with dark brown eyes. She smiled.

“Reina,” she says. “Come on in, the children are waitng for you.” Natsuki opens the door wider.

I looked around the huge room. There were children of all ages, bustling here and about running around. A lot of them caught sight of me and came dashing at me, hugging my waist. There were a huge number of them, so I tumbled to the ground. They giggled and let me go. I stood up laughing.

“Here you go,” I grinned. I open the bag I was still holding and brought out a peach. I handed it to a nearby child. “Share this amongst yourselves,” I instructed them, handing them the bag. They take it eagerly. I turned to see Renji walking up to me. Renji is my brother that’s several years younger than me. He looked adorable with his brown eyes and dark red hair like mine. His crimson hair was drooping down around his shoulders.

I’m all Renji has. We grew up alone, in this unknown treacherous world. A family going by the last name ‘Abarai’ found us. They owned an orphanage. They died one day, leaving me to run the orphanage. We don’t know our true last name but we go by ‘Abarai’ now.

“Renji,” I said walking to him.  He grins and waves. “How was your day?” I asked.

“Fine, I’m hungry though,” he sighed.

“There’s fruit going around,” I said. His eyes lit up and he smiles at me. I smiled back. “Off you go get some then.” He soon disappeared in the crowd of children.

Natsuki was standing in the corner with a few children. She caught me looking at her and beckons me to follow her outside. The children she was talking to stalked off. I followed her outside the hut.

She looks at me seriously. “We’re running out of food.”
