Chapter 6:

Byakua and I rarely spoke over the next five years. He had his responsibilities as a noble. We no longer trained together. I trained separately with Sensei Kyoraku. I stopped using my zanpakuto for three years. I trained with just my fists and body and it appears I am quite a good fighter. I was getting stronger and even though I hadn’t used Hotaru for a while, I started to grow a very close friendship with my zanpakuto. I recently found out that I am the only shinigami that has ever had a single zanpakuto with the opposite sex. My zanpakuto is also the most handsome zanpakuto in Soul Society.

Over the years, I befriended a boy with the name of Ichimaru Gin. Gin was a guy with light blue hair, a perfectly lined face and eyes that were shut all the time. He’s not bright at all but he completed his six years of the academy in one year. Apparently he’s considered a genius. But to me, he’s a dumb blind bat. He’s very kind to me. I wasn’t friends with anyone else in Soul Society, besides my old friends. He told me about his relationship with Matsumoto Reingaku. He asked me for advice and I told him I wasn’t one for advices. He asked me too, if I was in love with anyone. I was incredibly ashamed of telling him, but even though his eyes were closed, I felt like he was reading my mind. Also I trust him. A lot. I told him everything, about my past, Byakuya and I, Renji and Natsuki, Hogoshaka and his powers. It all came out before I wanted to stop. He was very understanding about it. During the last year, he became Lieutenant of the fifth squad. Ichimaru Gin is now currently captain of the third squad. He said he’s going to put in a good word for me with Aizen Taichou. So this year when I graduate, I’ll be put into the fifth squad. I told him, I wanted to be his lieutenant but he said I was already picked for fifth squad but I could transfer later if I wanted to. I made Gin promise not to speak of my powers to anyone. I believe he won’t say a word.

Aizen is a really creepy dude. He is very handsome but he always seemed interested in my powers. One day, I got pissed and told him to back off or fight me and learn more about my powers literally. To my surprise, he agreed and said that we could fight. I told him coldly that I didn’t fight unless I really had to and that I avoided fighting at all times. I told him it was merely a threat. Gin laughed a lot when I told him about this.

It was a bright blue morning. The sun was bright and a long line of academy students were lining in a long line, observing the fight between them. We were in a courtyard, the training grounds. The fight in front of us was between the students. We were having a duel, one of the many important duels we have to fight before we graduate. This was our first. I yawned and observing the battle slightly. This time, we weren’t using wooden sticks anymore. We were using our zanpakutos. I yawned again. I cupped my hand in front of my mouth. There were two boys fighting. These fights were close to life or death.  The last duel we’ll have to do is life or death. You die, you don’t get through, you live, you do. Things have changed slightly in the way the academy works. I closed my eyes and fell asleep lightly. Damn Gin, why was he talking all night? Ugh, I’m going to have to make my battle quick.

The battle in front of me ended by one of the boys being stabbed in the stomach. People scurried and got him out of the way. The next person had to fight the winner from the battle before.

“Shihoin, Reina,” an irritated voice announced.

“Hmmm?” I opened my eyes. I looked to my left. I realized I was next in line. Damn. I sighed.

“Who am I supposed to fight?” I asked tiredly.

“See for yourself,” I looked up and saw the tutor holding a list of names looking at me reproachfully. The tutor was a woman.

I stepped out and saw the man I had to fight. He was bald and had a huge grin on his face. And he was a little bit ugly. I shrugged. “Well, what are you waiting for?” I yelled at him. “Give me your best shot!”

“You gotta take your sword out first.”

“I don’t need it.”

“Are you calling me weak?” he demanded.

“No, I don’t need it.”

“Draw out your sword, or you’ll regret it!” he screamed.

“Ugh, do you have to scream so much? I really don’t have time for this. God boy, do you not know who you’re going to fight?” I said, getting annoyed now. He was acting like a big shot just because he defeated two shinigamis.

“That’s it.” He lunged at me and I dodged effortlessly. He turned around and struck at me with his sword. I blocked it with my palm.

“Giving up yet?” I asked.

“Hardly,” he smirked. He flash-stepped and struck me form behind. I sensed him coming and dodged, flash-stepped and kicked his head. He fell forward. He got up and I punched his face. He blew back about 2 miles. He lay with his back on the ground, struggling to get up.

“Finished now?”

“No,” he croaked.

“Whatever, get up.”

He got up slowly. “You’re going to regret fighting me now.”

“I highly doubt it.”

He drew his sound and lunged at me. I flash-stepped behind him and kicked him to his side. He yelled and struck his sword at me. I blocked it and grabbed it out of his hand. I stabbed him in the stomach with his own sword, effortlessly. He fell to the ground groaning.

“Don’t think ever underestimate your opponent,” I said with a stern voice. I glanced at the tutor. She observed me and then looked at the body that was on the ground.

“That’s enough for today. Go back home and train. Meet me here again in the evening,” she ordered. I left and looked behind me. People were picking up the boy’s body slowly. I heard him groan. I relieved he wasn’t dead. I hated fighting, furthermore killing.

There was only one person that I wanted to see now, Byakuya. He didn’t show up today for the duels. He no longer looked at me like he used to. Where would he be? I thought hard while walking. I dismissed the longing for Byakuya and went on. I oblivious to the fact that Aizen was watching the fight I just had. He was thinking long and hard. He made up his mind and went to Gin.
