Chapter thirty-three: Bankai and unforeseen revelation
I couldn’t think. Heavy was an understatement for my head. A loud constant buzzing echoed through my ears and my vision started to blur.
My reiatsu was slowly drained out of me. Soon, the fans I held in my hands turned into a single katana in my right. Hotaru, I thought. Don’t bail out on me.
“Already?” she asked, towering above my collapsed figure. “Pathetic.” I gathered all my remaining energy and stood up, glaring at her. I regained my vision and concentration slowly.
I waved my sword and screamed in rage. I ambled to her and swung my sword. She blocked and I thrust again. Again and again, I tried to slash her. She dodged and blocked effortlessly. I couldn’t take it anymore. I shrieked and let out all my energy, creating a massive wave of fire.
Fang fired a cero oscuras that blocked it, creating an enormous explosion. A loud rumble was heard. I glanced up. The fake sky of Las Noches was cracking swiftly, dropping huge pieces to the ground below. A piece of sky fell right beside me. My eyes were red and bright, burning with resentment.
“It’s time Fang,” I told her. “It’s time we end this.”
“No,” she refused. “I’ll end you. But before I take away your life, you should know that my full name is Kasha Fang. And I’m the strongest Espada ever created by Lord Aizen.”
“It’ll be an honor for me then.” Fang gave me a look of question. “To end,” I continued. “The strongest Espada’s life.”
“You’re not even close.” She then flung her arms back and a black line was created. She directed it to me and the black line enclosed at my feet. I realised that I could no longer move.
Reina, you can do this, I thought to myself. I thought hard. To achieve bankai, one must be able to materialize and subjugate the zanpakuto’s inner spirit. It is the opposite of being dragged into a zanpakuto’s inner world, Sensei Kyoraku’s voice suddenly rang in my ears. I need to summon him into the physical world. I need Hotaru.
I screamed and summoned all my reiatsu. The pain was unbelievable. My eyes were nearly popping out of my head. Calm down, you can do this!
“Hotaru Hogoshaka!”I summoned, shouting out his name.
“No, no,” Fang whispered to herself, realizing what I was planning to do. She flew at me and flung herself upon me but my reiatsu was forming an invisible force that allowed no one to enter. I could feel a being stepping out of me. Hotaru appeared out from the middle of my chest. He turned to me and nodded.
“You are ready, Reina,” he told me. I realized that my sword wasn’t in my hands anymore.
I was screaming, piercing cries escaping my mouth. “You are different, Reina. Your bankai isn’t a sword. The power will escape from your hands. Just watch. You won’t need to defeat me. You did that years ago when I first entered you,” Hotaru explained.
He walked up to me. I was still shrieking. He cupped my face, and I instantly stopped. I gazed into his his crimson eyes, and I felt my insides melt down. “Be strong, Reina. You are more than what you think. You are one of the strongest shinigamis to have ever existed. If you lose now, you’ll lose everything.” He let go of my face and held my hands. “Are you ready?”
I nodded and gulped. He walked into me, and entered my soul. I felt myself immediately flare up. All of a sudden, flames from my hands. When I killed that Hollow…years ago, the same thing happened, I thought.
