Chapter ten:

As I got up to leave, a shinigami officer came in.

“Could you knock?” I asked, annoyed. Normally I would never speak to my squad like that but this person wasn’t apart of my squad.

“Vice-captain Kuchiki would like to see you in the Kuchiki manor,” he said coldly. I scoffed. He looked at me as though I was being very disrespectful.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked him.

“Because you are treating the Kuchiki family with disrespect,” he snapped.

“I’d love it if you wouldn’t talk to me like that,” I said quietly. I approached him. I was slightly taller than him and I looked down at him. He was quivering slightly but still kept a straight composure.  “Now, I am a captain. And you are not. I am part of the Shihoin family, which you are not. If you ever speak like this to me,” I paused and touched my sword slightly. “You won’t like what’s coming at you.”

“I’m sorry, mistress Shihoin,” he apologized quickly, glancing at my sword than at me.

“It’ll be taichou to you,” I said coolly. “Now leave. Tell Kuchiki Soijun that I will come shortly.”

He grimaced and I looked at him calmly. He quickly muttered a word of apology and went outside.

“Stupid suck-ups,” I murmured to myself.

I was quite offended that Soijun would send someone like this to me. If it were me, I’d just go personally. I purposely waited a few more minutes before I made my way to the Kuchiki manor.

I decided to knock before I entered through the front door. Byakuya answered the door and smiled at me.

“Reina, what a surprise!” he said.

“You didn’t expect me?” I asked.

“No.”

“I did,” a voice said from behind, which I recognised as Soijun’s. “Tell her to come in.”

Byakuya held out the door for me to step in. I looked around and saw that Soijun was expecting me to follow him into a room. I looked at Byakuya with question. He wasn’t looking at me but instead he was looking ahead. I walked into a room and faced Soijun.

“So, I heard you regained contact with my son,” he began. Here we go again, I thought. “Did you have fun?”

“What do you define fun as?” I asked him.

He chuckled. He walked to a desk and sat down and scanned me by looking into my eyes. I stared right back at him, calmly. “Tell me, do you love my son?”

I didn’t answer. I looked at Soijun and then at Byakuya. Byakuya still wasn’t looking at me. But instead he was looking forcefully at his father.

“I asked you a question,” he said.

“A question which I can choose to answer or not,” I interrupted.

“In this case, you will be answering,” he simply said, still not breaking eye contact with me.

“You can’t tell me what to do,” I calmly said.

“Since you are in my household, you can. You fall under me now.” I didn’t want to tell him. I didn’t want to tell him in front of Byakuya. I’ve never felt weaker.

“Now you listen to me. I know your kind. You will break my son’s heart. From this moment you will never see or talk to him again. Is that clear?”

I couldn’t take anymore. I turned around and stormed out of the building. I walked into people. I wasn’t going to cry but I couldn’t withstand the pain. I started running now. I wasn’t running aimlessly. The place I wanted to go right now was very clear. I focused my mind and let my reiatsu out. I flash-stepped. I stepped and halted.

Byakuya flash-stepped as fast as he could to reach Reina. He was outraged at his father for treating her like this. Yes, Byakuya had to obey and respect the law, but he couldn’t obey it if it meant hurting Reina. She means so much to him and not seeing her all these years just kills him more. His family has put all of this responsibility on him that he couldn’t see Reina anymore. His father forbids him to see her but he can’t let this opportunity go. He was going to the first place they had a real conversation, beside the river. Beside the purple-blossomed trees.

Her hair was radiant and red in the setting sun. Her head bowed low, causing strands of hair to shelter and cover her face. Her fists were clenched tightly. Byakuya gently made his way to her. He reached his hand out to grasp Reina’s. Her hands unclenched as he did this. Reina lifted her head. She was tearless but her eyes held despair. She tried to smile but couldn’t. Byakuya pulled Reina into a hug. She didn’t hug back. Instead she stood there with her head buried in his chest. Byakuya’s arms were wrapped around Reina’s body. He let go with his hands on her shoulders. They faced each other staring into each other’s eyes.

“I can’t speak to you,” Reina whispered.

“That won’t happen,” Byakuya said sternly.

“I missed you,” she said.

He didn’t say anything. His hands placed a strand of Reina’s hair behind her ear. He pulled her close to him and kissed her. He pressed his lips against hers and she let him. Her lips felt soft against his. Her hand reached to his neck and caressed it. His hands ran through her hair then cupped her face. They stopped kissing and embraced each other. They fell onto the grass with their heads laid back. Reina’s head was leaning against Byakuya’s chest while Byakuya’s arms were around his body. They didn’t say one word. They fell asleep in each others arms.
