Chapter eleven:
I woke up startled. I sniffed the air. It smelled sweet and fresh. I got up and massaged my temples. The sun wasn’t up yet. A tree towered above me with sweet smelling purple blossoms. In front of me was a riverbed, with crystallized water. I looked to my side. A man with long silky black hair was sleeping peacefully beside with his arms crossed over his chest. Byakuya shifted slightly. I stretched and gazed at him.
He opened one eye and looked at me. He didn’t smile and he got up, stretching. We didn’t say anything for a while. I went next to him and leaned against his shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“What for?” I asked.
“You’re going to get in trouble for seeing me. You know that right?” he asked as he looked ahead.
“Well,” I sighed. “I don’t care. I’d fight for you. I’ll be with you no matter what.”
He didn’t say anything. He dropped his gaze and looked at me. He didn’t smile and he was back in his expressionless demeanour. I didn’t mind this at all, I preferred it much more. We watched the sun rise in silence. The sun was rising slowly upon the vast horizon.
My stomach grumbled loudly. “Ah, sorry. I just haven’t eaten in a while.”
“Why are you apologizing? There’s nothing wrong with being hungry. I guess I should head back. I’ll come see you in the evening,” he said.
He got up and offered his hand. I took and he pulled me up. I hugged him and he wrapped his arms around me, pressing his lips against my head.
I turned around and flash-stepped. I was in a forest now. I flash-stepped again, bumping into something. I looked at and met my eyes with a foxy grin.
“Hello Gin,” I said unemotionally.
“Aw, isn’t Reina happy to see me?” he teased. I playfully punched him which he easily dodged. He then attempted to punch me. I caught his arm and threw him away. He landed on his feet easily and lunged at me. I quickly jumped to a side and kicked at him. He blocked my kick with his arm. I flash-stepped in front of him and punched him in the face. He didn’t have time to dodge or block since my punch was too quick. He fell flat on his back. My face was straight as I towered above him. He had his hand on his face, wincing slightly.
“Ouch Reina, do you have to hit that hard? You know I was only teasing right? I let you win purposely,” he told me, managing to smile.
“Do you want another hit to your face?” I threatened with my fist in the air pointing towards him.
“No, no!” he cried as he got up. I smiled victoriously. When he got up, the difference in our height was clearly displayed. Gin was much taller than me but I was still considered tall.
He grinned at me. “So what’s up Reina?”
He stopped wincing now and he displayed no kind of injury. “Byakuya and I are together now.” I explained to him what happened last night.
“Soijun,” he growled. “He’s usually not like this.”
“Yeah.” I wanted to talk about something else now. And Gin knew it.
“So, how have you been enjoying your role as captain?” he asked.
“It’s not bad. Wait, you’re supposed to call me taichou! Call me taichou, or else I’ll slam your head to a wall!” I threatened.
“Ahahahaha, no I think I’ll stick to Reina,” he said, grinning.
“You’re right. I prefer that much more anyway,” I agreed.
“Let’s go get something to eat. You look like you’re starving,” he said.
“You guessed right,” I said, glancing at my stomach.
As we sat down to eat, in squad 10’s cafeteria, I glanced at Gin. I then gobbled down my bowl of rice and asked for another one to a shingami.
Gin observed me with his eyes closed.
“How are you supposed to see anything with your eyes barely opened?” I asked annoyed.
He chuckled. “I’m keeping that a secret to myself,” he smirked.
“Whatever.”
“Did you know I’m going to become squad 5’s lieutenant under Aizen?”
“What?” I exclaimed. The shinigami came and placed a bowl of rice and a plate of sushi in front of me. I muttered a word of thanks as the shinigami bowed and turned away. “Aizen’s captain now? Why didn’t he tell me? No one’s telling me anything these days.”
I reached for a sushi with my chopsticks and stuffed them in my mouth. “Yes, he is captain now. And he’s going to make me lieutenant.”
I swallowed down my sushi. “Congratulations, when are you going to start your duties?”
“Tomorrow, possibly,” he replied.
“Are you not going to eat?” I asked, gesturing to the food.
“No, I’m not hungry.”
“I see.” I placed a mouthful of rice and chewed it quickly.
“You sound like you’re hungry,” he said.
“I just haven’t seen food for a while,” I replied as I swallowed.
“So what is Byakuya like? Are you happy?” he asked.
I considered this for a moment. “Of course I’m happy. Byakuya is wonderful. He fails to be his usual self around me.”
“So you love him?” he asked me casually.
I stopped. Answering this question was to Gin was much easier than answering it to Soijun.
“Yes. I suppose so. I love him a lot. I don’t want him to go away.”
“It’s unusual seeing you like this. You’re always usually so tough and unemotional but now you seem vulnerable.”
“Thanks,” I said sarcastically.
“Sorry but it’s true.”
I finished eating then got up. “I’ve got to go. I need to do my captain duties.”
He laughed. “Yeah, you do that.”
