Today was the day that I was going to graduate. I’m going to put in a squad, and maybe become a captain. I was so damn excited. We were all standing in a line, waiting for our names to be heard. The hall I was standing in was huge. I sighed, trying to consume my excitement.
“Kuchiki Byakuya,” an old man’s voice called out. Yamamoto Genryuusai was personally here today for our graduation. He had his hand’s calmly holding on to his wooden walking stick. He had his eyes closed, thinking. Byakuya walked out of the line and faced Yamamoto. We were starting off with the noble families.
There were 13 groups of people standing. Each captain was standing in front of their squad facing us. There were vice-captains standing next to their captains. I spotted Youruichi and give her a quick smile. She caught my glance and beamed.
“You will be hereby placed in the sixth division as 3rd seat,” Yamamoto said.
“Thank you sir,” Byakuya said. He walked to the sixth group. My name was next.
“Shihoin Reina,” Yamamoto called out. I walked out and faced Yamamoto.
“You will be placed in the tenth division. This division is currently without a captain or a vice captain. We have observed you in your training and we believe you have the potential to become a captain. Do you accept the offer?” Yamamoto announced. I’m going to be in tenth division? I assumed I was going to be in five. At least I won’t be seeing Aizen that much now. A captain? Wow...
My eyes widened in shock. I glanced at Youruichi. She nodded and smiled. I grinned at Yamamoto. I realized his eyes were closed, so I cleared my throat in embarrassment. “Yes, Captain. I accept the offer.”
“Good. You are now captain of the tenth squad. You will begin your duties tomorrow.”
I grinned. I just graduated and already I was captain. I though about the days I dreamt about being a captain. Now, my dream is a reality. I walked to my squad and smiled at them. A few smiled back but others held a grimace.
I opened my eyes. I was in the world of my zanpakuto. The clouds were slowly drifting.
“Hello, Reina,” Hotaru smiled.
“How have you been coping?” I asked.
“Well. I miss you using my powers. But it doesn’t matter. You’ll have a hard time finding an opponent that makes you draw out your sword.”
I chuckled. “Thanks. I just wanted to tell you, that I became a captain today.”
“I knew it won’t be long before you became one,” he smiled.
“Thank you. Hotaru, that really means so much to me.”
“It’s no problem,” he shrugged. He looked at my expression. “There’s something wrong? Isn’t there?”
“It’s nothing. Don’t worry.”
“You know, you can tell me anything,” he assured.
“I just miss Byakuya a lot.”
“I can tell.” I looked at his bright red eyes.
“Well, I need to go back.”
“Good bye, go talk to him.”
“I will.”
It has been a week now since I became a captain. The duties were not as hard as I assumed. I had to do the paper work and tend to my squad. I still had time to get to know my squad. There was a child that intrigued me greatly. His hair was white and short. He was a mere child but a strong one too. His name was Toshiro Hitsugaya. Hotaru would shudder slightly when I walked pass him. His power might be ice, since Hotaru reacted to him. Toshiro would look at me with a queer look, and he would flinch. He would always mutter an apology afterwards. Everyone treated him like a child. But I treated him like an adult. I saw great potential in him.
He was shy and he rarely smiled. But he was still a good kid. I’d talk to him sometimes. He was smart too. He looked up to me greatly. He reminded me so much of Renji, only with a much colder demeanour.
I walked around my new office. There was a sofa in my office, and a desk. A shinigami walked in. I turned around to face him.
“Hello, Shihoin taichou. I have message from the captain-commander. You can start choosing a vice-captain today.”
“Thank you,” I said. “Tell everyone to meet in the meeting room of squad ten. I’ll be there shortly.”
The shinigami bowed and left. I sighed and thought of who I was going to choose. It was obvious, I wanted to choose Toshiro. I left the room and made my way to the meeting. I arrived and walked in.
I looked and observed around the room. The room was filled with shinigamis. Some were looking very excited.
“I have decided for a vice-captain. You have all worked very hard. But unfortunately, there can only be one. My vice-captain is now going to be, Toshiro Hitsugaya.” I beamed and announced. Toshiro stepped out of the crowd and walked towards me with a small smile on his face. I wrapped the lieutenant’s badge around his upper arm. He turned around and faced the crowd. The crowd clapped and cheered wildly.
