Chapter 4:
Joining the academy was a very hard thing. Training and fighting increased greatly over there. I had very little time training with Sensei. The academy taught you kido as well. I was terrible at it. I preferred using my body and fists.
I still had no luck with my zanpakuto. Sensei said I was very strong and should be having it soon. I have actually defeated Sensei in sparring with my bare hands on numerous occasions.
It was a normal day for Kyoraku Shunsui. Reina was off to the academy and he was drinking with Juushiro under the cherry blossom tree.
Shunsui sighed. “Juushiro, I’m starting to worry. Reina still hasn’t found her zanpakuto and she is already very strong.”
“There is another possibility. Maybe you should try the boys’ technique,” Juushiro replied.
“And expose Reina too much? No, I can’t do that,” Shunsui refused.
“If you wait any longer Reina might not even have a zanpakuto. She might end up like Kenpachi or Yoruichi.”
“But I am certain she has a zanpakuto inside of her. I can feel it when I fight her.”
“Byakuya has already found his shikai. I have an idea, why don’t Reina and Byakuya have a duel to the death?”
Shunsui considered it. “We could try that. I doubt they’ll kill each other though.”
“Exactly, they can have the duel this afternoon.” Ukitake concluded.
My eyes were wide open with shock. “No!” Byakuya and I cried at the same time.
“It’s the only way,” Sensei sighed. “Do you want your zanpakuto or not?”
“Of course I do! But I’m not fighting Byakuya.”
“Reina, Byakuya, listen to me,” Ukitake said gently. “It’s only a duel. Neither of you are going to die. We are not going to let that happen. You are not strong enough to kill each other yet. But during the battle, Reina’s going to learn her zanpakuto’s name. But that won’t happen until Byakuya gives it his best shot. Byakuya, don’t be afraid to use your shikai. Reina’s strong enough to withstand it. Don’t be afraid. This needs to happen.”
This reassured me a little. I looked at Byakuya for help. He too was looking at me. I nodded at Ukitake and he smiled. Byakuya nodded too and gave me a small simper.
“All right, let the battle begin. We’ll be watching.” With that, Sensei and Captain Ukitake went beside and sat down beneath the cherry blossom tree. Byakuya and I faced each other. We were a couple feet apart. This was it. Byakuya unsheathed his sword and held it out to me.
“Scatter, Senbonzakura,” Byakuya muttered. His sword turned into millions of purple petals. It came at me and I flash-stepped. I landed behind Byakuya. He noticed and as he turned I landed a kick on his back. He fell forward but still held his balance. The petals came for me as I dodged. I tried to land a blow on Byakuya but failed as the petals came for me. I blocked it, using my hands. The petals disappeared leaving my hands bleeding slightly.
