"Sweetie, how many times do I have to tell you? I - wait, what are you doing?"
I was not listening to my dad. In fact, I was no longer in reality.
I was immersing myself in one of my Goosebumps books. What is it called? Oh, yeah.
'Night of the Living Dummy.'
Mom turned around to face me. "Are you reading that one again?" she asked, smiling. "The one with the dummy in it?"
I looked up from my book, frowning at my mother.
"He is no dummy!" I cried out. "We have been over this!" I knew that my mom was just kidding about the 'dummy' part, but no one, and I mean no one, calls him a dummy - especially if they are just joking!
"How many times do I have to tell you? Don't call him that!"
"Why don't you read a decent book?" Dad stated, his hands both gripped on the steering wheel as he made a right turn. He tried to sound serious, but by the crack in his voice, I could tell he was playing with me.
"Boy, Mom and Dad are trying so hard to cheer me up," I whispered under my breath. "They know how hard it has been for me. I am really going to miss my best friends, Chase and Carrots. We all have so much in common. We like sports. Reading."
"Being part of the Fandom."
"Did you say something, dear?" Mom said, interrupting my thoughts.
I brushed my short, blonde hair away from my face. "No," I replied sadly.
"Darling, you still didn't answer my question," Dad spoke up. Mom gently slapped her hand against his shoulder.
"Harold, please!" she exclaimed in a serious way. "She is grieving. Give her time. If it makes our little girl happy, let her be in her own world. Let her read the books that she wants to read."
Mom turned back to me, her facial expression looking a little scared. "However, I do not know how you can like those books."
"Are you kidding me?" I exclaimed happily, raising my voice. I sort of get a little excited when I talk about Goosebumps. After all, it is both my favorite book series and TV series - and soon, it would be my favorite movie!
