"Shelly!" Cassandra called.
"Whoa!" Shivers exclaimed as he gripped her arms. "Calm down! Please."
She jerked away from his grasp and shoved him hard. Shivers stumbled back, but did not fall to the ground. Thank goodness.
Cassandra made her way inside and repeated my name over and over, the tone of her voice getting louder each second.
"Shelly! Shelly!!"
I stood straight up and breathed heavily, my heart pounding, and my body pressed against a wall.
What was I going to do? If she found me, then I would be dead meat. I would be grounded for the rest of my life.
"Shelly Madison! When I find you, you will be grounded for life! I cannot trust you anymore!"
See?
"Shelly," Hannah whispered. She pointed under the table. "Hide under the table. I will get a tablecloth that reaches to the floor. Cassandra will never find you."
I slowly shook my head. "It will not work," I whispered back. "There is a guarantee that she will look under the table." I heard heavy footsteps.
Coming closer and closer to the dining room.
"I am not about to hide you in the kitchen. And if we step into the hallway, then she will see you." She got up and grabbed a tablecloth from nearby. She was not joking. The tablecloth was so long and wide that it touched the floor.
I grabbed the plates of food and carefully set them on the floor. Hannah grabbed the cups and set those next to the plates. She unfolded the tablecloth and laid it on the table. The tablecloth covered every part of the table, even the legs, and reached the floor.
"Shelly, come out wherever you are!" Cassandra demanded.
"Now!" Hannah said softly. She lifted the tablecloth, and I dove under the table. When she released the tablecloth, I heard Cassandra.
"You are not Shelly."
"No, I am not," I heard Hannah say. "My name is Hannah, and—"
"I do not care. I am only here for Shelly. Where is she?"
"Why do you want to know? And why, out of all the houses that are on this block, do you think that Shelly is here?"
"I have my reasons. Plus, I have legal custody of her." And then, she yelled. "What the heck is this?! An adoption paper?"
"Yes. My father...is adopting a little boy that is in the orphanage."
"Oh, really?" I heard crumpling noises and saw the paper in a ball. "Which orphanage is the boy from?"
"Well...I believe that my dad said that the boy is from an orphanage near here."
"Lies!" The tablecloth was lifted, and staring at me was Cassandra. "Look who I found." She grabbed my arm and pulled me out from under the table.
"Ow!" I cried. "You are hurting me!"
"Only a person who was keeping my Shelly a secret would have the plates and glasses on the floor. And the tablecloth is a mess! It is not straightened properly!"
Shivers ran into the dining room and reached for me, but my caretaker swatted his hands away and looked at him with a sickening glare.
"Stay away from me and my house," Cassandra warned. "If you do not, then I will have to take proper measures."
"Like what?" Shivers asked, crossing his arms.
She smirked and whispered in his ear, and his face turned pale.
"O-okay...you can take her."
"Dad!" Hannah protested.
He walked over to her and hugged her tightly as Cassandra helped me to my feet and led me to the front door.
I teared up. "What...what did you say to Mr. Shivers?" I finally spoke up.
She looked at me, and then looked away. "I would tell the whole town the truth about him."
