My caretaker and I hurried back home. I tried breaking free from her grasp, but it was no use. She had a good grip on my arm. And every time that I did struggle, she squeezed my arm, the sharp tips of her fingers digging into my skin.
"Ah!" I yelled. "Stop! Please!"
Cassandra gave me a sickening glare, one that could kill.
"I am very disappointed in you, Shelly," she said, using a low tone. "What on earth convinced you that leaving the house was a good idea?"
I sighed heavily and looked down, not saying a single word.
"Shelly, answer me. I would like to know what would cause you to do such a thing."
"So you would take it away from me," I muttered under my breath.
She heard me, but did not hear the words that I said. "Excuse me?"
I just turned away, and Cassandra gripped my face.
"Look at me when I am talking to you."
She turned my head in her direction, and I closed my eyes. I could feel myself tearing up.
"I am not liking this attitude, young lady. You are already grounded for a month for escaping. Do not make me ground you for two months for the attitude that you are showing me now."
I slowly opened my eyes. Tears immediately streamed down my cheeks. I sniffed and glanced up at her, and then frowned. And then I said something that I never thought that I would say, especially to Cassandra, in a million years.
"I do not care."
My caretaker gasped. She was shocked.
"What...did you say?" she questioned.
"I said that I do not care!" I exclaimed angrily. "It will not matter whether you ground me or not because I always remain in that house! You force me to stay in my room every second of every day!"
"That is not true! I let you out of your room at times."
"Yeah, but not long enough! I am only allowed in the kitchen during breakfast and dinner! That is it! I am not allowed to go in the other rooms! Heck, you only make me go to the bathroom twice a day!"
"Shelly—"
"And let us not forget the fact that you will not let me go outside and get some fresh air. You will not let me enjoy the seasons! And you will not let me make friends!"
Cassandra let out a low growl and slapped my face.
"Yah!" I cried.
"You should know why I am strict on you and will not let you have as much freedom as the rest of the kids around here. I am only protecting you!"
"Y-you are treating me like a slave!"
The caretaker did not like that comment and slapped me again, harder this time, and I screamed in pain.
"You are not a slave! Remember that!"
I held my face, whimpering, as Cassandra and I crossed the street. There were no cars or trucks on the street, so we were in the clear.
We soon got to the other side, and Cassandra looked at Shivers' house and narrowed her eyebrows. "Stupid neighbors," she mumbled.
I overheard her and was about to respond to that, but I decided not to. I did not want to get slapped again.
We walked up to the front porch, and my caretaker opened the door. She forced me inside and, still holding onto my arm, closed the door and went into the living room.
"I found her, Shawn," she told him.
Shawn was sitting on the sofa. He had his guitar in his lap and was gently playing with the strings, making some soft sounds.
He glanced at me and smiled. "Glad that you are okay, Shelly," he stated. "Cassandra and I were so worried about you."
I just rolled my eyes to that response. Cassandra and Shawn did not notice though.
"She was at the house across the street," the caretaker explained to her boyfriend. "The house belonging to a Mr. Shivers."
"Oh, dear," Shawn replied. "I have heard lots of things concerning that guy. He is bad news."
"No, he is not," I protested. "He and his daughter are nice people. They let me stay there, and Mr. Shivers even made a special breakfast just for me."
"Quiet!" Cassandra ordered. She hurried up the stairs and took me to my room. "You are grounded for three months!" She opened the door to my room and threw me in. "You do not leave the house! You do not go to a stranger's house, and you do not talk back to me or Shawn!"
"But—" I started, but she cut me off.
"Do not start! I do not want to hear you for the rest of the day!" With that, she slammed the door.
I quickly got up, plopped down on my bed, and burst out crying.
"It is not fair!" I shouted. "It is not fair!"
I continued my crying, and then spotted something from the corner of my eye.
Light. Bright light.
I rubbed my eyes and looked at the light, trying to figure out where it was coming from. I stood up and walked to the window. I peered out the window and became surprised to what I found.
A black car. Parked by my house.
The car was very shiny on the outside, and its headlights were on.
Feeling a bit of curiosity, I placed my hands under the window and lifted the window all the way up. That way, I would not bang my head like I did yesterday.
I poked my head out.
And heard a voice.
A soothing voice.
"Hey there, beautiful. I heard that you were lonely."
