Confusion in Every Way

The teens looked at me with confused looks on their faces.

"Uh, what was that?" the teenager named Taylor asked.

I could feel my face getting hot. I could not believe that I embarrassed myself in front of the people that I wanted to be friends with. Why did I even say that? I was not in the Goosebumps universe - was I?

I suddenly could hear my every thought.

Why did you do that?

What is wrong with you?

No wonder that you do not have a lot of friends.

Feeling like a failure, I turned and starting walking away from them.

"Wait!" Hannah hurried after me and placed a hand on my shoulder. "Where are you going?" she asked me.

I shrugged. "Probably home," I answered.

"But you just got here."

Tears started forming in my eyes, and I tried hard to hold them back. "...I know."

I became shocked - and at the same time, awkward - when she hugged me.

Why was she hugging me?

"I am so sorry," she said.

I was confused. "Sorry for what?"

"For what you are going through."

Wait! How did she know about my parents' deaths?

"When Zach and I first met you and your mother, I felt bad for you."

I gently pushed her away and slowly shook my head. "She is not my mom."

I could see that Hannah's cheeks were turning red. "That woman that yelled at me and Zach earlier was not your mother?"

I nodded and rubbed my arm. "She is my...caretaker."

"Oh."

We stood across from each other for what seemed like forever until Hannah finally spoke up. "What about your dad?"

I could feel tears running down my cheeks. There was no stopping the waterworks now. Without even thinking, I hugged onto Hannah tightly and burst out crying.

Zach, Champ, and Taylor came running over to us and became worried about me.

"Is everything alright?" Champ asked. Zach just stared at him.

"You do realize that she is crying, Champ," he said. "So something is definitely wrong."

"I-I am sorry for my o-outburst," I stammered as I wiped away my tears. "It is just that...well...they are gone."

"Your parents?" Hannah questioned.

I nodded sadly.

"Your parents are gone?" Champ asked. "Are they missing, or did they go to another country?" Taylor nudged Champ.

"She means that her parents passed away," she told him.

"What happened to them?" Hannah asked. "Or do you not want to talk about it?" I did not respond.

"Look, you have had a rough morning," Zach reassured me. "Why do you not just go home and rest for a bit?"

Hannah shook her head. "After how her caretaker treated us, Zach? I am not letting her go back to her house." She looked at me. "You can stay with me and my dad."

I was immediately surprised at what she had just said to me.

I could stay with her and her family? At her house? But she hardly knew me.

"What?" I finally spoke.

"I would like it if you stayed with me and my dad. Please? We have an extra bedroom, and my dad is a pretty good cook."

"But...I might be a bother."

She shook her head. "Oh, no. There is no trouble at all. And my dad will happily let you stay with us."

"What about my caretaker?"

"I would not worry. My dad and I will keep you safe. Besides, it will be like having a sleepover."

I thought about Hannah's offer.

Should I take it or not?

I remembered what I had packed in my backpack. I had my camera, phone, Kindle, 3Ds, and most importantly, my Goosebumps books. I was pretty much set. I looked back at Hannah.

"Yes."
