Slappy and Shawn toppled to the grassy ground. Shawn, having tight grips on the wooden wrists, held him down and got on top of him, arching his back like a cat would as if he were prepared to pounce on him.
Slappy struggled. He was putting up a fight. "Let...me...go!" he demanded.
My teacher grunted. "Not...a...chance!" he refused.
The puppet let out a growl, and then raised his wooden leg and kicked Shawn in the shin.
"Ah!" Shawn let out a cry as he quickly released the wrists and fell back. He landed on his back and held his left leg, moaning in pain.
"Shawn!" I exclaimed. That was the least of my worries. I had my own problem.
A huge wave of fire had broke out and was spreading across the field. It was a chilling moment. And to make matters worse, some of the fire had circled around me, closing in on me.
I stayed in the middle of the fiery circle and hugged myself. Drops of sweat ran down my face. My body. Inch by inch and second by second, the flames drew closer to my warm body, and I was getting hot. Too hot.
"Help!" a cry of attention escaped from my throat. "Anyone! Help!" I fanned myself with my hands, trying to stay cool and calm. "Please!" I was not doing good on the calm part though. "Shawn! Anybody!"
I turned to the pirate and werewolf and gave them puppy eyes, hoping to get help from either of them.
Hey, they may be monsters, but I would rather get kidnapped by them than stay near the fire and get burned alive. I would have a better chance at surviving if I were kidnapped.
The pirate and werewolf just stood where they were, shocked by the fire.
"Help me! Please!" I begged to the two creatures. I glanced at the werewolf. "I promise that I will give you a treat if you help me."
The werewolf twitched his nose and looked at the pirate.
"Aarrghh!" the pirate said. "Me thinks that it would be a bad idea." He stroked his beard. "It is either us..." He pointed a finger at me. "...or her! And me thinks that we should leave her be. Otherwise, it will be swooping the poop deck for all of us!" With that said, he and the werewolf hurried off.
"No!" I called to them. "Come back!" I leaned over to the fire while calling for them, and one of my fingers touched the fire. "Yah!" I quickly pulled back my hand and went back to the middle of the circle. I blew on my burnt finger, which did not get burned badly, thank the readers, and shuddered in fear.
This was it. My doom.
I looked back at the fighting between Shawn and Slappy. Shawn had kicked the puppet's bottom, and Slappy cried out in agony as he flew a feet into the air. He fell face first in a puddle of mud.
Sheesh. That had to hurt, even if he was entirely made of wood and ink like he told me.
"Round two, dummy!" my teacher yelled. "Do you have what it takes?"
I jumped up and down. "Shawn!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. "Shawn, over here!" It was no use. He and Slappy were too far away to hear me.
I started coughing, and my legs collapsed. I lied on the grass, helpless and unable to speak loudly. I could now only utter low sounds.
"Help...help me..."
Splash!
"Huh?!" My eyebrows shot upward at the peculiar sound. A splashing sound.
I looked at my surroundings and realized something right off the bat.
The fire was gone.
Yes, you heard me correctly.
The fire that had surrounded me and spread to the football field, the flames wanting to claim me and the field, had disappeared.
How? That is what I was wondering.
I noticed an enormous puddle of what looked to be water. It was clear and looked almost blue with hints of white. I began getting on my knees when I felt something odd. Something sticky. Whatever it was clung to my body. I raised my palms to my face. The same stuff that looked like water was on my hands and arms.
But it felt sticky. And slimy.
From the corner of my eye, I spotted the praying mantis nearby. He was by some trees and eating the leaves off them.
"Shelly!"
I turned to whoever said my name - and became surprised.
It was Cassandra, Stine, Zach, Hannah, and Champ. Champ also had Taylor with him. They hurried to me.
"Shelly! My girl!" Cassandra exclaimed happily as she hugged me tightly, and then slowly pulled away. "Ew. What are you covered in? Slime?"
Stine examined me and the big puddle on the field and shook his head. "Not slime," he stated. "Saliva. More precisely, praying mantis's saliva."
"...yuck!" I was about to gag, hearing that I was covered in none other than saliva.
"Do not worry, Shelly," my caretaker reassured me. "We will give you a nice bath when we return home."
I sighed. "Yeah. Being covered in animal saliva is far better than almost dying by fire."
Cassandra raised an eyebrow. "What?
I patted her shoulder. "Long story."
Shawn came over to us. He had his arms wrapped around the puppet.
"The book!" Shawn said. "Hurry!"
Stine immediately spotted the manuscript by his feet and picked it up.
"No!" Slappy protested, trying to kick his way to freedom. "I am not going back! I cannot go back!"
"Sorry, Slappy," the writer spoke. "But you have no choice in the matter." He handed the manuscript to me. "You can put him back in, Shelly. He has caused you the most stress today."
I glanced at the manuscript, and then at the puppet. "I...I cannot."
"Why not?" Champ asked.
"I...I am in love with him."
