I was shocked at what he had told me to do. I nearly let go of the manuscript and pulled away from Hannah. I held the manuscript close and wiped away my tears.

"What?!" the caretaker snapped at him.

"It is okay," the writer reassured her. He winked and turned back to me. "Look, what Slappy has put you through is not right. Not right at all. However, there is no other choice. You need to go and find him. Strike a conversation with him." He lowered his voice. Though, I could still hear him clearly. "You have to give up and do what he says."

A tear ran down my cheek. "W-what?" I stammered.

"You cannot be serious," Cassandra said. She was a bit surprised too.

Stine nodded. "I am serious. Dead serious." He got up from his seat and placed his hands on my shoulders. "Shelly, I know that you can do this. You have already proven yourself by finishing the ending in time." He patted the top of the manuscript. "You will find the way. I know it. And...I am sorry that I doubted you before. You truly are a creative writer."

Two more tears streamed down both of my cheeks, and I looked down. I felt Stine gently ruffling my hair.

"You faced Slappy many times. He tried frightening you, and yet you were not afraid. Even if you thought that you were scared, you were not. Otherwise, you would have run away like the wind. And I should know." His body shuddered. "He gives me the creeps sometimes, but I try hiding the fear and showing the courage." He took a step back. "And I know that you can too. Just think about it."

Taking every word, every phrase that he said, I rubbed my eyes and looked back up at him. He had both of his hands behind his back and was smiling at me. I turned to Cassandra. She too had her hands behind her back and stared at me with no protest at all. No negative requests. Not one word.

I let out a heavy sigh and headed to the door. I opened it, and the door made a creaking sound.

Creak!

I looked back at everyone, hoping to get a protest from one of them that I should just give myself to Slappy.

But no. They turned away from me and stayed silent.

Sniffing, I walked out of the room and into the hallway.

It was time for me to give up.
