"Shawn!" I shouted.
Do any of you readers remember Shawn?
For those of you who do not remember, Shawn was my teacher. He homeschooled me. He too is a "Non-Fiend." He is Cassandra's new boyfriend and first appeared towards the beginning of this book.
Now do you remember?
"Shawn!" I yelled. I jumped up and down like a girl who ate too much sugar in her lifetime and waved my hands and arms frantically. "Over here!"
Shawn appeared from behind a couple of trees and ran as fast as his legs would let him. His short, red hair flew back, the tiny strands on top of his head reaching for the night sky, and he huffed and puffed.
I put my arms to the sides and gave Slappy a satisfying smirk. "You are in for it now, dummy!" I proclaimed. "Shawn is going to beat you to the ground! He is hardcore just like my caretaker and a "Non-Fiend" himself!"
The dummy shot me a glare that could kill in an instant. He really did not like being called the 'D' word, especially when the girl whom he chose to be his bride admitted the word that he despised from the bottom of his wooden heart.
Do evil dummies even have hearts?
"You...shut up!" he ordered me. He turned his head slightly to look at Shawn, who was coming close. My teacher was, I guess, only three inches away. "And as for you..." Slappy raised his wooden hand and snapped his fingers.
Out of the blue, two creatures, a pirate and a werewolf, emerged from the darkness and sneaked up behind Shawn.
"Shawn!" I cried, trying to warn him of the two dangers. "Shawn, behind you!"
It was too late.
Before my teacher could make a move of defense, the creatures grabbed ahold of his arms and hoisted him up. His feet were now a few inches from the ground.
"Hey!" Shawn cried, surprised by what happened. He kicked and squirmed, trying to break free from their grasps, but it was no use.
The creatures hurried to Slappy and set Shawn back on the ground, letting the bottoms and sides of his shoes touch the tall grass. They remained gripping his arms, so he would not escape.
My teacher looked up at Slappy and frowned. "You," he said.
"Well, well, well. It is the one character that all our readers forgot about," the puppet stated. "Our fellow readers sure abandoned you."
"I was never abandoned. And I am positive that the fans remember me from the beginning."
Slappy waved the match around. That got me concerned, considering the fact that fire was on the match. I did not want him to accidentally or purposely set something - or someone - on fire. The only thing that should be set on fire are the shadows that Nigel dealt with.
"They thought that the rescuer was going to be Papa." The puppet snorted. "They thought that it might be Cassandra. Or both Papa and Cassandra. Somebody even guessed that it was Tippy. But no. It was you, Shawn, all along. The most useless and uninteresting character to be ever put on paper." He cackled. "What a big disappointment."
"Watch your mouth, you oversized, piece of wood. I am, in fact, a very interesting character. More interesting than you."
"Oh, really? How do you think that?"
"Let me explain."
I groaned softly. Great. He wanted to explain his backstory. Ladies and gentlemen, especially ladies, get your tissues. His story is tragic.
Shawn took a deep breath. "When I was born, my mother died. When I was four years old, my father died due to a heart condition." He paused, and then continued. "I did not have any siblings at the age of six because I accidentally shot and killed my brother and sister with a gun at the age of five. I did not even know that it was a gun!" He wiped away a tear. "I had grandparents, an aunt, and an uncle, but they were all shot and killed at a store when a robber tried robbing the place. After that incident, I was sent to an orphanage. I no longer had family members that were alive, and no one wanted to adopt me. Ten years in that orphanage, and I was finally adopted by a man and woman. However, it did not last long. As soon as we left the orphanage, my adoptive parents got run over and killed by a truck."
I tried holding back tears. His story is so sad no matter how many times that I hear it.
"Oh my gosh," Slappy said. He was shocked by the story. "Did you ever get adopted?"
He shook his head. "No. And to put icing on that cake, Cassandra told me yesterday that she still has feelings for Stine and is considering to break up with me."
"Wow. You must have bad luck."
He shrugged. "You get used to it. Plus, it gives me plenty of character development."
"Well, your story may sound tragic, but mine is worse."
Shawn raised an eyebrow. "You have a story?"
"Of course!" The puppet sighed. "It is about me and Papa. We used to be the best of friends, and then one day, he turned his back on me and locked me in my book!"
"...mine is more tragic and actually hits people's hearts hard."
Slappy quickly got on his little feet and jumped up and down on the hood of the car. "Mine is tragic! Very, very sad! What Papa did was inexcusable! I did what I was created to do, but he did not care! He locked me up!"
My teacher had just about enough of him. He suddenly broke free from the creatures' grasps and hurled himself at Slappy. I gasped and saw the match slip out of the puppet's grasp. The match landed on the ground...
...and I found myself surrounded by a circle of fire.
