Hannah gasped. Shivers' mouth dropped open, and his eyes widened, making his eyes shape like eggs that you get from the store. They were both surprised by what I had just told them.
"Y-you do not want to be adopted and become part of our family?" Hannah stammered. "Or...you do not want to get adopted at all?"
A smile spread across my face.
"...why are you smiling?"
"Why else?" I responded. I gently slapped her back. "I am only kidding!"
"Kidding?" Shivers questioned. He took his glasses off and rubbed his nose with a finger.
"Think about it for a moment. Do you really think that I would refuse such an offer? If I was serious, then my other option, which is the only one besides getting adopted, would be to stay with Cassandra." I hugged myself. "She is a bad caretaker."
Shivers put his glasses back on. "From what Hannah told me yesterday, I can definitely agree with you on that. Although Cassandra is technically not a bad caretaker, she is extremely protective."
"Like a certain someone," Hannah stated as she crossed her arms and glared at her dad.
His cheeks turned red. "I am still learning from my mistakes, but I am not as protective as before!"
"Yeah. Thanks to the monsters." Hannah immediately covered her mouth as soon as she said that.
I tilted my head to the side. "Monsters?" I said. "What monsters?"
"Uh, she was talking about a movie," Shivers informed. "One with lots of monsters."
"Ooh. That must have been a scary movie. What was it called?"
I noticed drips of sweat running down from his forehead, and his cheeks turned redder. But why? I just asked a simple question.
"Uh...um...breakfast time!" He hurried to the table and plopped in one of the chairs. He grabbed his fork and started eating.
I frowned. "You could have told me that you do not know what the movie is called."
Hannah sat to the right of him. She picked up her glass of apple juice and drank it until she now had half of the juice left in the glass.
I stood where I was, placing a hand on my stomach. My stomach was still hurting, and my throat throbbed in pain just from staring at the food.
I was so not hungry.
"Come and join us," Hannah encouraged. "Dad fixed a plate of food just for you."
I gritted my teeth as I heard the word 'food.' I was so not in the mood for food.
"Thanks. But no thanks," I said, taking steps back.
"It is delicious! My dad makes a great breakfast. Heck, he is a great cook!"
Shivers swallowed pieces of food that he was chewing and turned to her. "Thank you for the compliment," he said.
"Really, I—" I was interrupted by a knock at the front door.
"I will get it," Shivers volunteered. He placed his fork down and got up. He hurried to the door and opened it. "May I help you?"
The person who was at the door was frowning and had her arms crossed.
"I want my Shelly back," the person spat.
I peered at Shivers and the mysterious person. And I whimpered softly.
The person was none other than Cassandra.
