I hugged myself, and a chill went down my spine. "What the heck was that?" I asked myself.

The laugh grew louder and louder. It became so loud that I had to cover my ears.

What in the world did Shivers have in his studies?

The laughter soon died down, and I uncovered my ears and took my sweet time to the studies. My hands were now sweaty, and I could feel my heart beat rapidly.

I stood in front of the door that led to the studies, the only room that Shivers said that was off limits for me. I took deep breaths. In and out. Out and in. I was deciding on whether or not I should go in the room. If I did, then I might find out who had been making the creepy laughs.

And I would probably get caught by Hannah or Shivers, and I would be in big trouble. Shivers would kick me out of his house for disobedience, and I would have no other choice but to go back to my caretaker!

No way! Going in the room was not a risk that I was willing to take.

"I should go and tell Mr. Shivers," I suggested. As I said that, I heard a noise coming from the studies, like something had dropped. I jumped. "M-maybe it was just the wind."

I heard another noise. Coming from the same room.

I was worried. "What on earth is in there? I hope that it is not a burglar or intruder." I then heard a knock on the door and raised an eyebrow. "Who...who is there?"

No response.

"D-do you want me to open the door?"

Still no response.

I wanted to run downstairs and get Shivers, but I was a bit curious who this person might be. I definitely knew that it was a person. An object cannot knock on doors.

I noticed a keyhole on the left side of the door. I bent down and peered through the hole, spotting anything that was out of the ordinary. I could not see much. The hole was so small.

All of a sudden, the color black ran past the keyhole, and I gasped.

Someone was most certainly in that room.

"Ah!" I let out a cry, feeling a finger poke my eye. I quickly jerked away from the hole and gently rubbed my eye. "That was not very nice, whoever you are! You are a dummy for doing such a thing!"

"Who you callin' dummy? Dummy!" the person finally answered.

I screamed and soon heard footsteps coming towards me. I felt a tap on my shoulder and screamed some more.

"Shelly, relax!" I heard Shivers say. "It is only me."

I spun around and saw Shivers. He was standing behind me and had his hands on hips. I gulped.

"What is with the screaming?" he questioned. He looked at the door, and then back at me. "And why are you near the door to my studies? You were not planning on go in, were you?"

I shook my head. "No, sir," I responded. "It is just...I heard noises."

"Noises?" He was surprised by my response. "What kinds of noises?"

"Well...I heard laughter..."

"Was it laughter that got under your skin?"

I slowly nodded. "After that, I heard three noises. Two were the sounds of things dropping. The one was knocking on the door."

Shivers' face turned in a sense of worry. "Oh my."

"I...I peeked through the keyhole. I wanted to see if a robber had entered the house. Whoever it was poked me in the eye! And when I exclaimed how he was a dummy for saying that...he...he...it sounded like a male voice!"

He sighed. "Say no more, Shelly."

My eyes widened as Shivers twisted the doorknob and burst into the room.

Was he crazy? We do not know who is in the studies! It could be somebody dangerous!

Shivers surveyed the place. He looked under the desk. He checked other places. But no one was there.

"But..." I said, shocked that he could not find anyone.

When he was finished looking, he hurried over to me. "Looks like that nobody is here right now," he stated.

"But...I heard him! I heard his voice! He called me a dummy!"

He patted my head. "I know that you did not make that stuff up. You do not look like a crazy girl."

I glanced up at him with tears in my eyes. "I am not crazy..."

He slightly smiled and closed the door. "I know that you are not. You are a sweet, young lady." He took my hand and led me down the stairs. "I will call the police after lunch."

"So...you are not mad? For me taking a peep in the room?"

"Not at all."

I was relieved that he was not angry with me. However, something did bother me.

Who was in the studies?
