Peter Pan's POV
Once I get to the beach, all the mermaids are already at the surface, knowing what was wrong.
"Peter, it wasn't us!" One pleads.
"The one who did it fled the island!" One says.
"We kept our promises!"
"Please don't hurt us!"
"I don't give a shit who did it!" I scream. "Fix her!" Skylar's body was frozen but she could still sob and scream, and every sound crushed me. A mermaid with a green tail swims up to us, examining her ankle. She looked familiar, but I couldn't put a finger on it. She was an adult, with long brown hair and green eyes. I knew I could trust her the moment I saw here. The ones with the gold tails are ones you have to be careful with - which are unfortunately most of them. She gently placed Sky's foot back down with a sigh.
"We can fix it, but it's not going to be without a price," she says.
"I know. All magic comes with a price. I'll pay it. Just save her!" The squid ink starts to wear off, and I know we don't have much time. They all swim off, and I wish so hard that they're coming back. I hold Sky to me, nuzzling my head into her neck.
"You're gonna be okay..." I whispers to her, holding back my own sobs. The green tailed one comes back, holding multiple things in her hands. A shell, a scale, and a small glowing pebble. She smashes the shell, picking up a small shard. She slashes Sky's ankle open. Sky cries out in pain as her screams got louder. I feel a tap on my shoulder, turning to see Felix and Johnny.
"Johnny go back to camp! It's not safe for you here!" I yell at him. Luckily this mermaid was helpful, the others wouldn't hesitate to kill.
"Peter you have to let go of her," the mermaid commands. I nod and let her take control. She pulls her legs into the water. She crushes the scale and pebble into dust, rubbing it into the new wound she inflicted on Sky. Skylar passes out from the pain. The mermaid pulls her completely into the water, letting her float on her back as more of the creatures circle her. Somehow, not one had a golden tail. There was a pink, two blues, a purple, and another green - but no gold.
I watch as they cast some kind of spell. I sit there with my feet in the sand, feeling tears leak down my cheeks as I watched them try to save her. If it weren't for me - this would never happen. Felix places a hand on my shoulder and Johnny sits next to me, hugging my arm as I watch. They finish, and hand Sky back to me. She had a streaks of colors in her hair. It went green, blue, pink, purple, green, blue. The colors of their tails.
Sky slowly wakes up, smiling as she sees me. I smile through all my tears and kiss her repeatedly. Repeating "I love you" as many times as I can. I didn't care that a couple of the boys were here. They were bound to find out anyway. And right now all I wanted - all I needed - was to make sure Skylar knew I loved her more than anything else. Felix picks up Johnny as I take both of Skylar's hands in mine and help her stand. The moment she puts weight on her ankle, she cries out in pain, and collapses back to the ground. I look to the mermaids.
"We warned you of the price. Every step she'll take with that foot - that's not in water - will be excruciatingly painful,"
"I told you I would pay the price. Not her,"
"It doesn't work that way, Peter. We can't chose who pays it,"
"B-But she can't just... how am I supposed to.... but what about..." I mumble aimlessly. Skylar was on the ground, clutching her foot. I kneel down next to her, before scooping her into my arms.
"Let's just go back to camp..." I whisper to the boys. They nod and Felix continues to hold Johnny as we walk. We get to camp, and I take Sky straight back to the tent, closing the flaps behind us.
