Summer 2023

I can still remember the time while I was with my best friends. We were watching an animated film, the credits are rolling when a thought came into my mind.

I jolted from my seat and sat beside Therese who's playing with Maria T.

"Tey, I want to marry you...

r sister."

The shock was evident in their eyes but slowly I saw how excitement replaced it. The moment I saw the sweet smile of my best friends, I knew I had their blessings.

There was a time when I thought Pauline and I aren't for each other.

After I came back, a lot of things happened. Not only to our lives but also with everyone elese.

And then there's Pauline and I, doing it all wrong again. Ending up hurting each other for not wanting to hurt each other. Ironic, right?

We almost gave up. Almost. Because when I remembered how it felt to live without her... I know I don't want to go through that again.

So when I know that all is well, and that everyone is happy with their own lives. I knew I have to do the one thing, I've been wanting to do so.

So one sunny morning, as we jog around the village. I blurted the question that will change both of our lives. Separately and together.

"Pauline, now that everyone had their own little happy ending. Don't you think it's time for us to put an end to what we have now and start a new beginning?" She stopped on her tracks and faced me.

"I want to stop calling you my girlfriend, Pau... I want to call you my fiancè and soon enough, my wife."

The picture of Pauline's misty eyes and lips set into a frown, is still so clear.

I tried playing it cool, but I know with just me, brushing my hair repeatedly, she knows I'm a nervous wreck.

"It's not easy now and it will never be easy, but with you, I can go through everything. So, Pauline Marie Monique M. Gaston, would you mine changing your last name? Please, be my wife?"

I stared at her as I knelt in front waiting for her answer.

"You are the most randomantic person I know. And I must admit this is not how I imagined to be asked. But look, we are standing under this tree in the place where everything started. The place that witnessed almost every special thing between us." She giggled and happy tears came from her eyes.

"So no, I wouldn't mind being a Madayag. I will marry you, Maddie. Whenever and wherever."

I thought that would be the sweetest answer I'll ever get. But no, the most amazing answer I received was when Pauline said...

"I do."

In front of the smiling people that all matter to the both of us.

No matter how different you are from everyone. A person will come into your life, whether you've know that person your entire life or not. May it be the most romantic or random way. That person will come and will show you, that you fit perfectly somewhere.

This is our story. A story of a MISFIT.
