Ch. 18

Auston's POV- September 2016

I smiled as Esmeralda got into the passenger seat and let out a deep breath.

"Hi"

"Hey" I said as I leaned down and gave her a quick kiss.

I pulled away and looked at her.

"How was your midterm?" I asked as I turned on my car.

I glanced at her as she slipped off her backpack and put on her seatbelt.

"It was really easy actually"

"That's good" I told her as I began backing my car out of the parking spot.

She nodded.

"What have you been up to?"

"Not much, I met some of my teammates for breakfast" I said.

"That's nice"

I nodded.

"Yeah, this tournament has kept me a bit busy" I admitted.

"Your NHL debut is close, are you excited?"

"I mean I have to make the team" I stated.

"I'm sure you will, you just got to go out there and give it your best"

"Last night's game might have been the last time that the team played together" I told her.

She nodded.

"Jake told us yesterday"

I nodded.

"Where does that leave you?" I asked.

I glanced at her and saw she was looking out the window.

"I'm getting reassigned to a team"

I nodded.

"I'm supposed to get an email tonight actually after the game"

"It's stupid because if they win they advance even though we have the same amount of points" I stated.

"That OT win last night really didn't help your chances, right?"

"Nope" I said.

I looked at her and she smiled.

"I mean at least you can say you were a part of a team like this"

"That's true" I admitted.

She hummed and nodded.

"Do you miss competing?" I asked her.

She looked at me.

"If you don't mind me asking" I added.

She shook her head.

"I don't mind"

She shrugged.

"The last time I competed was in 2013, and it took a while for me to come to terms that I would probably never compete again"

She smiled.

"I had a nice gymnastics career"

"You did" I said agreeing with her.

"Pay attention to the road before you get us killed. My athletic career is over, but yours hasn't even started"
