Chapter 22: Truth

"Excuse me? You're kidding right? Tell me you're joking." Josh crosses his arms and waits for me to answer. But I couldn't. Words can't describe the fear that's building up inside.

"No podias esperar despues que acabas tu educación [You couldn't wait until after you finished your education]???" My mom shouts. I just sit on the couch and don't say a word. My dad went to pick up my cousin whose staying over at the house for a couple days. And seeing my brother and mom is enough to scare me.

"Contéstame [Answer me]!!!!" My mom grabs me by the shoulders.

I look at her and begin to cry. I knew keeping this baby was going to be a mistake. I shouldn't have listened to the lady with her baby. I should've just gotten rid of the thing. Now my mom and brother are furious with me.

"Aubrey." My brother says in a serious tone. I look at him.

"Why? Why did you do it?"

"I don't know. I was really happy that day so I didn't think anything was going to happen."

"It was with Isaiah?" My mom says. I swallow hard and nod my hard.

"It wasn't his fault." I bring my voice down.

"Oh of course not. It was his dick's fault." Josh is always using sarcasm even if it's a serious conversation.

"Shit Joshua!" I yell.

"Don't yell at your brother!" Mom shouts at me and lets go of my shoulders. I glare at her.

"Then tell him to shut up! I know what I did was wrong. But Jesus! Give me a break here! You're all yelling and it's giving me a headache."

"We all wouldn't be in this mess if you didn't get pregnant." Josh spats. I roll me eyes.

"We'll see what your father says when he gets-" Mom didn't get to finish as the we hear the keys dangle and unlock the door. When the door opens my dad steps in with my baby cousin Liah who runs inside.

"Tía [auntie]!!!!" Baby Liah runs to my mom.

"Hola, preciosa [Hi precious]." My mom lifts her niece up and she grunts.

"Look how big you are." She says in that voice adults use when they speak to little kids.

"I'm four now!" Liah gives a cheesy smile.

"Hey my precious is home!" Papa smiles. It suddenly fades when he sees the serious look on my face. He looks at Joshua who also looks serious.

"Que paso aqui [What happened here]?" His voice changes to a more serious tone.

"Have your only daughter tell you." Joshua glares at me.

"Tell me what? Aubrey what's going on?" Papa was born in Mexico and was brought here at a young age. My grandma and grandpa spoke to him in Spanish and in school he spoke english. Which explains why he speaks both languages so perfectly.

"Papa..." I begin to cry. I disappointed him. I know I did. But I can't undo what I already did.

"Baby? Que tienes [What's wrong]?" Papa wraps his arms around me. I slowly pull away as the guilt builds inside of me.

"I'm... I..." No matter how hard I try words can't form properly in my mouth. My mouth is dry and I bite my lip. Suddenly I taste metal and I begin to feel nauseous.

"For God's sake just tell him!" Joshua yells, making me flinch.

"Don't talk to your sister like that, Joshua." Papa says. Joshua crosses his arms. Mom puts Liah down and she runs away.

"Aubrey we're waiting." Mom says. I take a deep breath.

"Papa... I'm pregnant..." I suck in air as my lungs find it hard to breathe. Papa's eyes widen. He doesn't say anything but reaches for the couch's arm and he sits down.

"Aubrey, go to your room." Mom points upstairs. I don't hesitate as tears fall down my cheeks. I run upstairs and slam my bedroom door.

"Fuck!" I tug on my hair and throw anything my hands can grab. I grab onto the sides of my drawers. I look at myself in the mirror and I look like a mess. The anger continues to boil inside of me. With one swift of my arm I knock down the things that were on top of the drawer. I kick the stuff on the floor. I yank the covers off my bed. I throw the stuff from my lamp table against my bed.

Then suddenly I hear a chain hit the ground. I stop and I drop to the ground.

"No." I pick up my necklace that I had left behind. The gold heart-shaped locket my grandmother gave me.

"Grandma... I'm so sorry.." I break down to tears and I begin to shake uncontrollably.

"The secret is out... Grandma...I'm pregnant...and now the secret is out." I whisper into the locket. It feels like a secret I'm telling my grandma...

"Aubrey, come here." Grandma smiled and motions me to go by her.

"Coming Abuela [Grandma]!" My younger self ran into her arms.

"I got something especially for you." She said in her accent. I smiled as I wondered what the surprise was. She digs into her apron's pocket. She takes out a box and handed it to me. It was a small rectangular object.

"What is it, Abuela? Is it for me?" I giggled. She smiled and nodded her head. I slowly opened the box lid open. My eyes widened at the beautiful thing.

It was a jewelry. A gold chain shining so brightly. And at the very bottom was a golden heart locket. I opened it and had a picture of me and Grandma.

"Abuela I love it!" I wrap my arms around her neck and kiss her on the cheek. She smiles and kisses my temple.

"I'm glad you love it, Sweetie. One day I won't be in this world anymore and I don't want you to be sad. I want you to always be happy. You deserve nothing but the best. You will grow up to a beautiful young lady. But even though I won't be in this world. You can talk to me. I'm always here."

I frowned.

"Why are you leaving Abuela? Did I do something wrong? I promise I'll be nicer."

"You are perfect just the way you are. And even if you do bad things, you will always be perfect." She smiles.

"I'm Grandma's perfect girl." I giggled at how funny it sounded. She giggled too and looks at me.

"If you feel like no one understands you- when you have no one else to talk to- gossip or deep thoughts- just whisper to Grandma. Because I will always be with you, Precious."

I hugged her one more time.

"I love you, Abuela."

"I love you most, Princesa."

My eyes slowly begin to close. I bring the locket to my lips. Tears continue to stream down my sticky cheeks.

"I'm pregnant, Abuela.... and now I don't know if I want it anymore." I whisper to the locket.

"I disappointed my family... I want to end this... I want to take my lifeless soul away... Grandma..." I whisper a small secret. Then my eyes couldn't stay open anymore as they grew heavier by the second. I lay on the ground clutching my locket and there I drift to sleep.
