(Sorry I don't really respond to comments to much, I really enjoy then, but I don't always know how to respond)
David stood between G and Eston, trying to ignore the lovey-dovey looks they sent the other's way every chance they got as the line marched outside to receive their diplomas.
Between the new couple, David had never felt like more of a third wheel.
David could see Theodosia standing at the front of the line. She waved to her Dad, who was sitting in the front, between two of the teachers' speeches.
A couple of the Senior teachers, plus of few from different grades, came up to the podium and talked about seeing all of them grow up, and how sad they were to see the seniors leave. David doubted most of them actually cared.
The principle talked too, mostly the same things the teachers had said, plus some stuff about helping apply to colleges, and how she hoped they all met their full potential in life.
Finally, it was time for the valedictorian speech, and George got up on stage. The graduating class cheered and hooted. Philip could be heard distinctly, yelling something about how that was his boyfriend up there.
George smiled at the crowd and took a deep breath before beinginng his speech.
"Before I begin my speech, I'd like to thank my teachers, especially Mr.King,-" Mr.King cheered, interrupting George "-as well as my incredibly obnoxious friends-" the eight of them cheered as well "-Aaron Burr, who's my stand-in Dad now, I guess. And my boyfriend. Philip."
"That's me!" Philip yelled, making the crowd laugh.
"Anyways," George said, smiling at Philip "Back to the speech."
"Freshman year was a year of new possibilities. We had just come into the school, and everything was so much different and more interesting than the middle school. New electives opened up, as well as new clubs, and new friends and classmates. And as much as it was a year of possibilities, it was also a year of stupid decisions and actions we now regret. I'm sure I can safely say we would all like to forget the things we thought were cool that year, and the stupid things we said and did. And that's why I'm retelling those tales- to make my fellow classmen suffer."
The line of graduates groaned, but you could tell they were enjoying the speech.
George continued to talk. Retelling stories of what had once been riveting gossip, and stories the all knew, like the time someone had put a baguette in one of toilets in the bathroom, and had flooded the first floor of the Language Arts building, or the time Dick had tried to get to Spanish teacher to fuck him. He then branched off to talk about happenings of Sophomore and Junior year, most of which David had forgotten until George brought them up.
Finally, George talked about Senior year.
"Senior year was the year that most of us will remember the best. Not because it's the most recent, but because of how much happened this year." George said "We started worrying about our futures, as well as the futures of our friends and peers. Exams were more stressful than ever before, and we all lived without sleep for at least a week. We changed, and we're still changing. Maybe we'll always be changing. But despite the changes, we all made it through high school more or less alive. And those changes, and our time here, will help us get through the rest of life."
George stepped away and headed back to his place in line so the principle could have the podium and start handing out diplomas.
