G was asleep, his head in Eston's lap; Animal Planet always put him to sleep.

Eston watch him sleep, running his fingers through the sleeping boy's curls.

For a moment Eston imagined they were a couple. They were out of college and married, and maybe had a kid or two they had just put to bed in the next room. Eston would work for NASA or something, and G would have opened the bakery he always wanted. They were happy and in love, and the people they knew were probably jealous of how perfectly the completed each other.

Quickly, Eston shook the thought away. It didn't do him any good to imagine a life he would never have with a person who only loved him as a friend.

"Is this your boyfriend?" Mary, Eston's older sister, asked, leaning over the back of the couch. At one point, when he was younger and had recently been adopted by his Dads', he might have jumped at her sudden appearance behind him, but those days were gone. He had quickly gotten used to how mysterious Mary was, and how she always appeared when you least expected her, probably with some crazy story she would never tell you.

"No, we aren't dating." Eston said. He never bothered to lie to his siblings- all six of them could see through him like he was made of glass.

"Martha has a girlfriend." Mary remarked "She told me on the phone."

Martha was the oldest of the seven of them, and lived in Chicago.

"What's her girlfriend's name?" Eston asked.

"I don't know. The only reason I was informed about her girlfriend at all was because Peter told me after he found out somehow."

Peter was their older brother, who happened to be absolutely unable to keep a secret.

Mary looked down at G for a moment, then back up at Eston.

"What?" Eston asked when she smiled faintly.

"Nothing. Just invite me to the wedding when you two get married." Mary said, walking away.

"We're not getting married!" Eston called after her.

"Whatever you say, Eston. I have to leave for work now." She picked up her purse and disappeared out the front door.

Eston sighed and looked down at G, who was still asleep.

"To bad we'll never get married." Eston said to him "Mary would be a lovely wedding guest."

(A little bit on the Jefferson children: of the seven Thomas and his wife had, only three survived past childhood- Martha, Eston, and Madison. I decided to include all seven of them, but chose only one of the surviving three to be central to the plot. Martha would have probably been the best choice since she was closest to Philip and Theo's years of birth, but I chose Eston for some reason I can't remember.)
