(Today my friend came to me with the option of having George move away, and making this even angstier, but not gonna do that)
Philip Hamilton and George Eacker hadn't spoken in a month.
They hadn't spoken through all 31 days of December.
Philip knew this because he counted.
He had seen George at school, and at the double Birthday party for David and G since their birthdays were close together, but he and George hadn't talked.
Probably because he was kind of avoiding George.
It wasn't intentional, it was just that any time George got close Philip became afraid that they wouldn't be able to reconcile, so he would walk away.
And now here he was, at G's New Years party, watching George from across the room, wishing he knew what to say.
"Hey Philip," G said, emerging from the small crowd of seniors in his basement "we're almost out of snacks, can you and George go get some more?"
"If you're paying." Philip said, standing up "But do I have to bring George?"
"Yes. You've both been complete messes since your fight, and I'm giving you the chance to make up. Here's a 20, I'll go get him." G dissapeared back into the crowd before Philip could argue.
He sighed and went upstairs to put on his boots and coat. As he did so he could feel the present he got for George move a bit in his large inside coat pocket.
He meant to give the present to George on Christmas, but had backed out of it, so now it was just sitting in his pocket.
George and G climbed the stairs, and G gave them a list of chips to get.
And so, Philip was stuck walking to the convenience store between the neighborhood and the town with the person he was fighting with.
Fantastic.
Eventually they arrived at the convenience store, and Philip dissapeared into the isles, appearing again with a few bags of chips, and one of pretzels.
Together, they got in line behind a few people to pay.
"Can I have the money?" George asked when they got to the counter.
"Ya." Philip said, digging into his pocket and producing the cash. At least they talked a little bit. But they still weren't exactly friends again.
They exited the store, and Philip realized that the televisions in the next store's window were broadcasting the New Years count down.
Philip went over to watch, and George joined him.
"10!" The people on the TV cheered.
Philip could feel George standing next to him.
"Nine!"
George was wearing a bright yellow scarf, a sharp contrast to his navy trenchcoat.
"Eight!"
It was snowing a wet snow, the kind that falls thick and dampens your hair.
"Seven!"
It was dark out, and the only light came from the streetlights and the TV in front of them.
"Six!"
George looked sad, and Philip wanted to reach out and comfort him.
"Five!"
Philip's heart fluttered in his chest.
"Four!"
The idea sparked into his head.
"Three!"
It was the only way Philip could think to reconcile with George.
"Two!"
Philip looked over at George.
"ONE!"
(Haha you don't get to know what happens until the next chapter)
