At the front of the village was a small hut made entirely out of cobblestone. There was a nook in the wall that spilled torchlight and connected to a door. Inside stood a slim villager with long, dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. Not like Gale's, Faolan remarked to himself. More pale, like the noonday sky. Gale's were darker, like deep ocean. He had an eye for color like that.
The stranger opened the door and waved to the incoming patrol. "Is it successful?" She shouted.
"Yes! Start the scan!" Gale yelled back to the beautiful girl.
While the villager went back inside the hut, Faolan leaned over to Sapphire. "What's the scan?" He asked warily.
"It's just a quick thing we do to new villagers to make sure that they're really Descendants. Trust me, it doesn't hurt or anything." Sapphire explained.
The mounted villagers, except for Gale, galloped off in a different direction. Amia took the reins of his steed and jumped onto her mule to follow them.
Gale approached the blonde girl and said, "This is Faolan. Sapphire found him earlier today, although... Bridget found him, first." A look of curiosity spread across her face as she shook his hand.
"My name's Ellie," she told him.
"Hi," he replied, and turned to Gale, shyly. "Look, I know it's strange to ask, but please treat Bridget fairly. I know that she isn't a Descendant like us, but she is to be respected. If she hadn't come, I'd be dead."
He blinked. "Oh. Well, alright. Pass through the scan real quick and I'll escort you to a house."
Faolan glanced at the one-block wide opening that led into the camp. There was a subtle blue hue coming from the walls of it, as if it was enchanted. Faolan gingerly stepped through the gap and felt nothing. Ellie glanced at something inside of the booth and gave a blocky thumbs-up.
Bridget followed nonchalantly, strolling through the scanner like it was nothing. Ellie looked into the booth again and frowned. She stepped inside and loudly slammed the door.
"What was that about?" Faolan muttered to Bridget.
She shrugged. "I don't know. It must be malfunctional."
Gale straightened up and beckoned for the two to follow. "No time to dawdle. Let's go. Sapphire, should we take her to Onix afterwards? The shrimp'll need a sword."
As Faolan averted his gaze, flushed, Sapphire smirked and nodded. "Yeah. If he's gonna train with JP, he'll need it."
The four walked along the cobblestone path in silence. Other villagers passed; some experimenting with their powers, others not. Faolan saw one summoning flowers in her wake, and another chatting with a charged creeper, who stared back at him with her cold, black eyes. Faolan looked down at his own hands and thought, I wonder what my power is.
Finally, they arrived at a large house made of stone bricks. Gale pushed open the wooden door to reveal a simple interior with a ladder going upstairs. The torches sputtered fire painfully--it must have been an old house.
"Here we go. This one will be big enough for both of you. The bedrooms are upstairs," he explained.
Immediately, Faolan ran over to the right and around a corner. The others could hear his thrilled shouts. "Bridget, look! There's a kitchen!"
She turned to Gale and purred, "Thank you for your hospitality, sir. We appreciate it."
He nodded. "Anytime. Sapphire will stay with you and make sure that you get situated, and then she'll take you to Onix for tools. Take care," Gale replied and waved goodbye.
Sapphire stepped inside and shut the door behind them. "I'm glad that you're here, Faolan. It's much safer here," she said and stole a glance at Bridget.
Faolan ran out of the kitchen and nodded eagerly. But then he caught Bridget's eye.
In a single bound, he was by her side with one arm around her shoulders. "Hey, cheer up. It'll be fine. If these guys don't accept you... well, that's too bad. You're still my friend."
She cast him a grateful look. "Thank you. Although I think I'll be fine."
After a few awkward moments of silence, and of Faolan staring into Bridget's hazel eyes, Sapphire cleared her throat. Faolan jumped a little.
"Are we done here? I don't like all this mushy stuff." She said quietly. "You guys can go put your stuff in the chests upstairs. Then we'll go to Onix."
