Chapter 15: Unexpected

Gabe POV:

So, today's the overnight trip. I'm not that excited for it though. It's finally Thursday...I felt like yesterday went on forever. I'm still trying hard to forget about it though. I sit up in my bed, barely opening my eyes since sunlight was coming through the windows. I hate getting up in the mornings. The night...it's pitch dark...I find it easier to sleep in the dark. Jake and the others were still in bed. I checked my phone.

5:07am

Geez. I can't believe I got up 2 hours too early.

I dozed off again and woke up at 8:00am. All the others were outta the room now, heading off for the cheesy morning activities. I got up, scratching my arms unknowingly then remembered to stop.

Teddy POV:

I was at the charcoal art station for my morning activity. I was making a picture saying "I LOVE YOU". I didn't really know who I was making it for, but I was in a mood like that. Gabe then came up to me. I stopped what I was doing and flipped my paper over, clearly not wanting him to see what I was doing, stupidly.

"Hey where were you?" I asked. "I, uh, got up a little late." he mumbled. "So, you wanna draw?" I asked. "Heck no!" he said.

It was finally time for the overnight trip. It's currently 5:15pm and we were loading up in canoes. Each of our clothes and belongings needed were packed in white garbage bags to carry with us. We're going to be in some island for tonight and then pack up and go tomorrow morning in order to reach home on time. We were going with the 9th graders, so Gabe's class as usual. I was busy lifting up a bag in a canoe when Ivy came up to me.

"Hey T." she said. I smiled then continued what I was doing. "OK, something's up with you. I haven't had a proper conversation with you ever since we got here." she said. I looked up and apologized, "Sorry, Ivy. I was just....caught up in everything. Problems keep on piling up on my plate." "That doesn't mean you totally ignore your best friend!?" Ivy said, smirking. "When we get back we could have some girl time. Promise" I promised. "Fine." she said, and walked away. I bet in her mind she was jumping for joy.

PJ POV:

I was busy doing the dishes for Mom while she was putting Toby for a nap. I had picked up Charlie from Preschool about 2 hours ago. I was pretty exhausted at the moment. Can't wait 'till Teddy comes back. Suddenly, the phone rang.

I picked it up. "Hello?" I said, lazily. "Hi, this is...Karen. Is Amy Duncan there?" Shoot. It was Karen. The woman who mom absolutely HATED. "Uh, one moment." I put the phone on hold and called Mom to come down. She rushed down and said, tiredly, "What's wrong?" "Your, um, old boss called...Kar-" she didn't let me finish my sentence. "What does that clump nugget want now?" she said, hastily. Her mood changed pretty quickly. "I'm not sure...just talk to her." I said and held the phone out for her to take.

Amy POV:

"Hi....Karen. Haven't heard from you in quite a while." "Yep. Back at ya." she said. I could tell she really didn't want to talk to me. Well, I didn't want to talk to her either. "So..." I said, waiting for her to tell me what she wanted. "Well, many nurses and doctors are quitting their jobs now, and it's getting really busy from the hospital." she started off. Before she started her second sentence I could hear her whispering to herself, I can't believe I'm doing this. "They want you to return....to the hospital and continue your old job." I could tell it hurt her to say that.

Then again, I was shocked. I can't believe they want ME back. "I don't know it's-" I attempted to say something but she cut me off. "But....that's not all....since you quit for...family reasons....they want to offer you....double your....salary than what you had before." she paused inbetween her words but managed to survive through saying that one sentence.

Anyways, back to me. I was astounded. This is just unbelievable, it's unexpected. I had no idea what to say to her. I mean, we can't just live off an Exterminator's salary with 5 kids. I haven't really thought of how hard it has been for us ever since I quit. I mean, we've been happier, but not so good money-wise. I put Bob through so much stress and work just so we could stay on our feet.

I heard Karen on the other end saying "Hello? Amy?" I could also hear her grunt since I wasn't replying. I was too caught up in my thoughts. How could I be so selfish? But, then again I did it for the kids, well Charlie and Toby. "Amy!?" I heard Karen say. "Oh. Can I think about it?" I gulped. She sighed in frustration and said goodbye but I stopped her.

"Ok, now what?" she said, angrily. "Um, when does the job start?" I asked. "Well, they'd prefer you to start.....hmm....as soon as possible." she replied. I now noticed Karen kept on saying they, not us. Well, she doesn't like me. Obviously, she wouldn't want me there.

Back to her reply. As soon as possible. ASAP. If I take this opportunity, who would take care of the kids? I could always ask PJ since he graduated and summer break is coming up so I'll have Teddy and Gabe. Teddy's also graduating this year. Oh, and, I'll maybe have Bob.

I'm gonna do this, Amy. For my family and their well-being.
