A/N: this is set three days after the attack on Gemma and Sophie's home. Just a bit of side information :)

(Sophie's POV)

I finally opened my eyes, but shut them immediately as the bright, white light hit my eyes.

"Sophie?" a voice said from above me.

"Mmmm?" I muttered, opening my eyes. Phil stood there and as soon as he saw me awake, he grinned and hugged me.

"I'm so glad you're awake!" He said. I thought for a moment, then it all came rushing back to me. The man, the knife, me passing out... and Gemma. I must be in the hospital.

"What time is it?" I asked Phil, who glanced at his watch.

"Six in the evening," he replied. I frowned at him. How long had I slept?

"You've been asleep for three days," Phil explained, smiling gently as my face morphed into shock. Three days?

"How's Gemma?" I asked, only worrying about the answer. It didn't help when Phil's face dropped.

"She's... Not very well," he explained. "The nurses said you could go as soon as you woke up, so we could go see her if you like."

I nodded frantically and sat up as Phil handed me some clothes. I took them and went to change in the bathroom. When I came out, I saw him waiting for me.

"Where is she?" I asked as we left the room. Phil merely gestured and we headed right.

"Down here," he said after some period of time. I looked up. The sign read 'ICU'.

"She's in extensive care?!" I said, horrified. Phil nodded sadly. How bad was her condition?

Phil opened a door to our left, and I peeked into the room before all the colour drained from my face. Gemma lay motionless in a bed, wires and machines hooked up to her, no colour in her face and an oxygen mask attached to her mouth.

"What's wrong with her?" I gasped. I saw Dan turn as he heard me in an uncomfortable hospital chair.

"Good to see you up," Dan said. "But Gemma's in a coma. The knife pierced her lung and..." He motioned miserably to Gemma.

"I'm so sorry," I muttered, hugging him. "You don't deserve this pain."

"But neither does she," was all Dan said. I sat down beside her, prepared to stay until the minute she woke up, whether it was three hours or three months.

*************three weeks later****************

I woke up as I heard a faint cough beside me. I gasped and sat up. Gemma's hand twitched. The heart monitor sped up, but fell back to a normal, slow pulse almost immediately. A nurse came rushing in, and my eyes caught Dan and Phil's. Was Gemma waking up?

The nurse fiddled with the machines before turning to our eager faces. "It appears she woke up for a few seconds, but her heart couldn't handle it, so she has returned to a comatose state. However, this is very good news," how she managed to say it with so little emotion was beyond me. Finally, I was a step closer to having my best friend back. And getting out of here.

I hadn't left since the day I was admitted because Phil had been bringing Dan and I food, I had showered and brushed my teeth in the adjoining bathroom and I had slept by her bedside. Although I missed my normal life, I would never leave Gemma.

As the nurse left, Dan spoke. "When do you think she will wake up?"

"Soon," I said with certainty. I explained as Dan and Phil looked at me. "Soon, because she's a fighter. She doesn't give up, and we won't let her give up. If she falls, Gemma will pick herself back up."

A/N: not a particularly long chapter, but hey ho, I wrote this straight after writing chapter nine. I am procrastinating about homework that is due in tomorrow, but I guess I will have to actually do it. Or not, I'm already failing in that subject... At least I'm not failing in any others!
