A/N: the last chapter was the mysterious one - placing all the cards face down on the table, if you like. This chapter flips them all over, revealing all the secrets and mysteries.

SOOO... We are coming to the END of this story! I really can't believe it. Honestly, it seems like yesterday that I was debating what to call the main characters, and what they should look like, etc.

Enjoy...

(Jason's POV)

*one week later*

I carefully observed Lily, Sophie and Gemma as they stood at the end of their second week of their tour. They knew it was today.

I could still see occasional odd glances from those around them. I noted that two others had joined them - the two newlyweds. I was slightly concerned about completely obliterating their bubble of happiness, but it was one of the last things on my mind.

Gemma and Sophie weren't paying much attention to those around them. They were on a stage, in the middle of a square, in a Italian town. They were searching - for me.

I watched as their eyes scanned the crowds frantically to no avail. I was too hidden. When I didn't want to be found, I would not be found. I was their guardian - I knew all their secrets, all their traits, habits, everything - and I knew their flaws.

"Operation Spiderweb is commencing," my voice boomed around the square as I strode towards the stage.

I felt all eyes on me and the only sound was my boots clacking their metal heels against the cobbled floor as I approached them. Gemma and Sophie looked faint.

"Jason," they said in synchronisation, dropping to one knee and bowing their heads.

"Rise." I commanded. They did so and as I looked them in the eye, up-close for the first time in several years, part of my icy cold shield melted and I knew my emotions shined through my eyes. "It didn't work."

They froze. They looked horrified and betrayed. I suppressed a wince at the rising fury on their faces. Cold, pure fury like I'd never seen it before.

"Then what?" Sophie spat so viciously that people backed away further into the slightly-retreated crowd.

"It still happens..." I said sadly.

"AAHHHH!" Gemma screamed, throwing one of her knives threw the air. It sliced through a electric wire, plunging the nearby buildings into darkness and making sparks fall to the floor.

They both stared me in the eye and I blocked the emotions, resuming my cold, steel-like shield as I had been taught. Inside, all I could feel was pain for their looks of betrayal - not from me, from the Vita et Mors.

"Lovell's! You have failed. It is time to uphold your half of the contract," the dreaded voice filled the silent square. "The Vita et Mors has fallen."

"What?" The three of us gasped, whirling.

"How? The contract was two specific lives, and peace if we succeeded. Not us falling!" I cried, resting my hands on the twin daggers that hung on a belt at my waist.

"They lied to you, Jason Lovell. Now, I believe you have something to tell them," He said, nodding to Gemma and Sophie, who immediately focused on me.

"Um..." I started, taking a breath to compose myself to see their crushed faces, the shock and the realisation of even more bitter reality.

"You are not Gemma and Sophie Shelser - you're not. You were lied to by Taliesin Edwyn. He didn't tell you - you're twins."
