Nagisa pressed up against the window, looking out to see the neighbourhood children walking with smiles on their faces. With the mask on the side of his head, he gazed out with a sad expression.
As he was watching, his mother started pouring candy into a bowl. She looked out of the window, wondering who her son was waiting for. She tossed the candy, and began to walk away from Nagisa.
Suddenly, his face lit up and he ran outside, waving his arms around. His mother was sceptical, putting a hand to her forehead and trying to see what he was seeing.
He ran up to a girl around his age, happily having a one-sided conversation as she stared at him, unfazed.
The girl wore a dress and a nail-through-the-head headband, while carrying an empty Halloween bucket. Nagisa was excitedly flapping his arms up and down.
His mother went outside with her tablet, and you looked over at her as she snapped a picture of the two of you. Nagisa turned to face the camera, putting on his brightest smile. You had a bored expression, and watched as his mother waved him goodbye.
You walked in front of him, slowly, holding your bucket in front.
His mother gazed fondly at the picture she had just taken.

Last Halloween –
Nagisa trailed back to his house, bruised and alone. He had one black eye, and the other wouldn't open all the way. On his door, there was a note reading:
We're out for groceries. Go ahead and play with your friends. We'll be back soon.
– Mom + Dad
He took it off the door and scanned over it, then tried the doorknob to find it locked. He checked under the mat, finding no key. Scrunching up the note, he tossed it aside, sitting down on the cold stairs. He rested his head on his hands, looking at the other children happily talking or wandering.
He looked down again. When he lifted his head up a second time, he saw an unfamiliar girl with a dress and a strange headband. She sat alone. Nagisa smiled.
He got up and walked over to her, going to the side of her face and sticking out his tongue. This startled the girl, and she hit him with her Halloween bucket.
He laughed, rubbing his face, and tried talking to her. He offered her a piece of candy, and when she saw nothing in his bucket, she shook her head, refusing.
Nagisa peered into her bucket, seeing cobwebs, and a stray fly. He was shocked, but she only shrugged her shoulders. He wore another sad expression, before dropping the rejected piece of candy into her bucket.
She looked at it, then at him. He unravelled his other piece of candy, giving her a closed-eyed smile. Her face became softer, and she reached into her bucket, taking the candy and unwrapping it, popping it into her mouth.
On the inside of her wrapper, the words You found me! were written.
The pair looked at his, and it read Forget dentists, I'm delicious! Nagisa laughed, as they sat on the curb together.

Nagisa skipped down the street, twirling round to face you, as you kept up with him, walking. He pulled down his mask, waving his arms around, and tripped, falling on his back. He got back up almost as soon as he had fallen, running around in a circle before tackling you to the ground.
