The black gloves that had once been so familiar to me now itched on my hands. I tugged at them, trying to rid myself of the discomfort. Merging with the Reaper had concentrated all of my powers back into my hands, so I had to start wearing gloves again.
Letting my breath out in a long, slow hiss, I looked up at my sister.
"Ready?" she asked.
It had been a week since my mass murder, and my encounter with the Espirituum. I was still trying to move past the fact that I'd killed all of those people. Everyone kept telling me it wasn't my fault that I'd killed those people. But I couldn't forget the sight of the death that had come because of my hand. Even though I had control over the Reaper now, I would always carry the weight of that day with me.
"I'm ready."
I looked from the deep purple gem cupped in my gloved hands to Alex's prone form in the hospital bed in front of me.
"You have to give me the soul fragment," Lilith said softly from next to me.
"I..." I stopped. "I know. I'm just... nervous."
"I get it," my sister said. "But it's okay. I know what I'm doing."
Suddenly overcome with emotion, I threw my arms around my sister. "I love you, Lil."
She squeezed me back. "I love you too, Gabe."
Tears threatened to bubble over as I released Lilith.
"Come on, you big softy," she laughed. "Let's do this."
Lilith took the gem from my hands. I watched as she crushed it in her hands, forming a mist the same shade of purple as the gem. Cupping the mist in her hands, she released it in front of Alex's face.
Alex inhaled the purple mist. Suddenly, she blinked, once, twice, three times. Her eyes fluttered open as she looked up at me.
"Gabe?"
"Alex, I - I'm so sorry."
"What?" she seemed confused. "This isn't your fault."
"But..." I couldn't figure out how to explain.
She shook her head. "Just come here."
I leaned in close as she reached her hand up, pulled me in and kissed me.
For the first time in forever, I felt safe.
