I moaned as I recovered consciousness. The memories rushed back to me. I snarled in rage as I realized what had happened. The princess and the soldier had escaped. The princess had asked me for food for the soldier, and as I went over to get it, I heard feet running. I had quickly turned around, but the princess had been right behind me with a rock in her hand, and that was the last thing I remembered.

I sprinted out of the cave, only to see that Keary was dragging the soldier over his shoulder. I saw the princess following, subdued. She must have realized that Keary was the only one who could possibly save her love now.

My face clouded in frustration and embarrassment. I stomped over to them, grabbed the princess’s arm, and pulled her into the cave.

Once inside, I threw her against the side of the cave. “Foolish! Keary needs you alive. But that doesn’t mean I can’t punish you for trying to escape.” I was really frustrated. It wasn’t because they tried to escape, it was the fact that I had been careless and had been knocked out, something that had never happened before.

“You wouldn’t have been able to find us if it hadn’t been for your stupid partner,” the princess shot back.

Before I could make another snarky comment, Keary walked in and dropped the soldier in the far corner of the cave. He shot a penetrating glare at me, and pointed an accusing finger in my face.

“You had one job, Fay! One job!” he raged. “You better not make the same mistake again, or I’ll…”

I cut in. “Or you’ll do what? You need my help, and you can’t beat me with or without weapons. I could beat you anyday,” I snapped, my face still red from embarrassment.

I could see Keary trying to control his rage, because his jaw was working. “Don’t let it happen again,” he said finally.

Keary faced Adira. “You two are almost more trouble than you are worth.” The man took a deep breath, then continued, “I want you to know that had you not tried to escape, I would have helped him. But since you did try, I will let him live in pain.”

Now it was Adira’s turn to be angry. But before she said anything, I thought of something, and a mischievous grin spread across my face. “Keary! I need to talk to you for a minute.”

Keary swung back around towards me and walked over. “What?” he grit out.

“Why not heal him, but then make them pay by hurting the princess. That way, it will punish both of them. The princess will be in pain, and the soldier will also be in pain, because he won’t be able to do a thing about it,” I said in a very low tone.

His features cooled and a slight grin touched his mouth.
