"What are the castle's defenses?" Fay asked, studying the map of the castle closely.
I pointed out some walls and a few gates. "These are its main defenses. We'll probably go to this side door here," I pointed to a small entrance next to the kitchens, "and then split up in the way I showed you."
She studied the for another few seconds then looked up again. "Where do you think the object is?"
It was at that moment when Derek, my hawk, returned. He glided into the tent and landed on my gauntleted left hand. He deposited a rolled up piece of paper into my other hand. I put him back on his perch and gave him some meat for his effort. Then, I laid the map on the table and studied it for a bit. I then pointed to a blank space in the middle of the dungeons. "Right here."
She looked at where I pointed, then over at Derek. She seemed to suddenly realize the connection between the ruddy feathers in my hair, and the red tailed hawk sitting on his perch. Apparently she hadn't noticed the feathers before, as they had camouflaged themselves quite nicely with my dark auburn, shoulder length hair.
She turned her attention back to the map and snorted, "You think he'd be more clever than to put it in a room and not label it in such a conspicuous manner."
"What do you mean?"
"Well... see?" She gestured towards the blank spot, "it's right there in the middle of everything. Just a blank spot on the castle plans. Wouldn't someone ask what's in there?"
"They would, if they knew it was there." I placed my hand over it.
She looked at me with puzzlement clearly written on her face.
"He does have it labeled in a more secretive manner."
"What? How is he going to label a big room in the middle of everything?"
"It's a special cell, meant for very dangerous people."
"Like you and me," she said. It was a perfect mix between question and statement.
"Potentially. He can put anyone in there that he considers to be especially lethal. But he conveniently kills anyone of that order before they can be put in there."
"Ah," she said, getting it at last. "So that's how he hides it. Is it in some sort of concealed compartment?"
"That's what we're going to find out."
