"Semaj, honey, it's not lady like to play with your food like that." Janelle chastises Semaj as she pushes the steamed green beans around on the plate mixing it with the gravy.
She looks up at her mother who raises an eyebrow and she puts the fork down on the plate. Her nerves were working up on her that was all. Since they had arrived at the restaurant Semaj hadn't said one word about having a boyfriend. She had tried multiple times before they left the house but then they went over Kearston's then dropped by Lina's house before they finally made it to the restaurant and by that time Semaj wasn't even up for telling them anymore but she knew she needed to tell them before they found out from somewhere else.
"I'm up for some dessert, how about you Simone?" James asks looking over at Simone.
You would think when a young girl like Simone, who didn't know all the facts behind what went on in the Calhoun family, would be thrilled to see her parents after pretty much five months but for Simone that wasn't the case. She wasn't thrilled or even the littlest bit happy that her parents were back because she automatically knew that things were going to change.
"No James she needs to eat her green beans first." Janelle protests before grabbing her glass of wine.
"I can't eat them." Simone mumbles staring down at them.
"Since when weren't you able to not eat green beans?" James asks raising his eyebrows.
"They were made with almonds. She's allergic to almonds." Semaj answers for Simone and Janelle and James exchange looks before nodding their heads.
"If you were around you would know that," Semaj thinks.
"Well then I guess we can order some dessert if you guys are up for it?" James ask slightly waving his hand for a waitor to come over and when they do he asks for a dessert menu.
"One minute sir," the young boy says nodding his head.
"You're doing very good in school, Maj." Janelle says rubbing her daughters hand but Semaj just moves it back.
"Thank you" she replies in a mumble.
"That's it," James says shaking his head. "I don't know what's going on with you two but the attitudes better stop here. Do you understand me? I know you two are probably angry with us for leaving you unattended for so long but it's what we needed to do so we can make a living. So you two can have the things you want and the things you need. So you won't have to struggle like your mother and I did." James was obviously irritated with the two girls lack of conversation and dry responses.
"James, James," Janelle says patting his hand, "it's okay. They both have the right to be angry, we have to give them that."
"They don't have a right to be angry, Janelle. They don't have the right to be disrespectful either and I suggest they both lose the got damn attitudes." His hand slaps down on the table making Simone and Semaj jump and for other customers to look over at their table. "Do both of you understand me?"
The two girls nod and James grits his teeth. "I said do you understand me?" He repeats through clenched teeth.
The girls nod their heads vigorously while replying. "Yes sir."
Forgetting all about the dessert, James just decides to leave. The ride to the house was quiet and the car was filled with tension and when they walked into the house it didn't get any better. Semaj was trying to just get away from talking to them let alone looking at them but right before she could go back into her room, her mom grabs her arm stopping her.
"Simone you go ahead and get ready for bed." Janelle says shooing her off and Simone looks over at Semaj who just nods her head.
"Goodnight" Simone mumbles making her way to the back.
