"Be careful and be sure to call to me the minute you guys land so that I know you're okay." My mom had been going down the parenting check list while I made sure I had all my toiletry essentials in my small pink drawstring bag.

"Mom, this isn't my first time going somewhere without you guys... I'm pretty sure I can handle myself." I dare not add on the fact that I've been taking care of myself officially since I was twelve because my parents and I were on good terms right now. I didn't want to lose the good streak we had going.

"I know, I know," she nods her head and then looks at me with a strained face and asks the most embarrassing question she's ever asked aside from me starting my menstrual cycle years ago. "Are you and Michael using protection?"

I swear my stomach turns the minute she asks me that and I freeze in motion, my drawstring bag hanging over my open suitcase. I wasn't sure if I should tell her she didn't have anything to worry about or if I should just be honest and tell her that we use protection. Either way I needed out of this awkward situation and I must've had good luck because there's a knock on my door and then Simone comes skipping in.

"Almost done packing?" She asks me as I let the bag go in the suitcase and then I zip it up.

"Just finished, I just have to check my carry-on bag and make sure I have everything," I nod my head as the awkwardness still lingers between me and my mother.

"Simone let me talk to your sister by herself for a minute... matter of fact go to the kitchen and make sure you get those snacks we bought for her earlier and separate ours from hers." My mother tells Simone and she nods her head turning back on her heals but as I stared at her walk away I was screaming for her not to leave me alone.

"Semaj you're avoiding my question..." She says folding her arms as I go over to get my carry-on bag off the floor to check inside of it also.

"I'm not avoiding your question but don't you think trying to have the birds and the bee's talk with me is about eight to six years too late?" I had everything that I needed in my carry-on bag but I continued to shuffle through it just so I wouldn't have to look her in the eye.

This was indeed awkward.

"It's never too late to have the birds and the bee's talk, Semaj. We've never had it before and I think that we should. I'm older I've had experience obviously and it's only right that I tell you the consequences of unprotected sex especially with Michael."

Slip up.

"What do you mean especially with Michael? He's clean. Mom, look, I'm eighteen. I've went to plenty of STD's talk through school and I've taken health class along with a girls talk class and they talk about all that stuff so I know about it. I'm pretty much informed."

"I mean because he's experienced... I wasn't trying to say that he had anything," she assures me holding up her hands in defense. "I-he's not pressuring you or anything is he?"

"No, he's not pressuring me."

I get it, as a mother she's concerned, but after I've practically raised myself AND Simone she still thinks that I'm little minded and don't know much.

"As I recall from an argument that you had with your dad you never denied already sleeping with Michael so... I just want to make sure that you're protection because what happened to me I don't want it to happen to you. I want something much different from you. I expect better."

"I'm not going to get pregnant. People automatically think that the minute I say I'm with Michael or they see I'm with Michael. Believe me when I say Michael is a no kids enter zone right now. He's not looking to have any and the thought hasn't even occurred to his mind since we've been together but since I can tell you won't leave it alone then yes mom-Michael and I use protection." Right as I say that Lina comes down the hallway and into my room.
