Semaj's POV
The rest of the school week for me had been crucial. With being so caught up with making sure Michael was okay and trying to get my father off my back and all the other drama that had been happening, I was allowing my grades to slip and when my interim report came in the mail both my mom and dad nearly had a heartache. The nice easy-going dad that came out of nowhere quickly changed back into the control hypocritical man that I had known him to be. Those D's on my report card really threw him off.
So for two straight days it was nothing but school and home for me. No trips to the hospital and I still hadn't gotten my phone back, but I was sure to tell Lina to tell Michael that everything was okay. I was just glad that it was finally the weekend meaning that if I finished all my homework and the late work that should've already been turned in tonight, I would have a free Saturday and Sunday.
"Are you almost done Maji?" Simone asks me sitting at the table.
She badly wanted to keep me company and I didn't mind it. We really didn't see each other much anymore which is funny considering we live in the same house, but with my being at the hospital every day after school and her being in her school programs and occasionally over the Jackson's made things that way.
"Yup, I got about five more math problems and then I'm care free!" I exclaim excitedly, looking up at her and smiling.
"Good. You know what's funny?"
"What's that?" I ask, punching numbers into my calculator.
"What's funny is the fact that you and Michael are together. Who would've thought? Janet believes that you two are destined to get married. Is it really that serious?" Simone was hunched over the table with a wide smile on her face.
I can't even reply from me giggling stupidly as my cheeks flushed red. "I hadn't really thought about how serious our relationship is, it never really crossed my mind and on top of that Michael, believe me, is the last person to ever think about marriage."
She chuckles and nods her head right as the doorbell rings. I can't even attempt to stand up before Simone is dashing out of the room to answer it. A few seconds later and crying Janet is being pushed quickly passed the kitchen with Simone following and then I hear a door shut.
Should I interfere? No.. it's not my place.
Maybe I could be of some help? Or maybe I'll just be an annoyance.
Ughhh. Okay forget it. I push my binder out of the way and stand up, dropping my pencil in the middle of my text book and then making my way to Simone's bedroom. I knock twice before opening the door and I see Janet quickly wiping her eyes with tissues and then forcing a smile.
"Hey Semaj, how are you?" She asks her voice shakey.
"Hey Janet, I'm good, and how are you?"
"I'm--well it's obvious I'm a mess." She sighs her hands fall into her lap.
"Could I maybe... be of assistance... maybe?" I ask walking in and closing the door. I look over at Simone and she shrugs before looking back at Janet. I go over and ease my way down into the purple beanie bag, immediately sinking.
"Well there's this guy at my school... his name is Jamal..." She begins and looks at me. I nod my head. "Well I was supposed to meet him at the movies tonight, I even put on this stupid outfit and had LaToya do my makeup..."
"So he stood you up?" I ask and she scoffs.
"I wish... no he brought Carlia..." She frowns as she says the girls name and wipes at her eyes again. "The thin mixed girl, they all laughed in my face..." she sniffles and pushes back against Simone's bed and Simone pats her thigh.
