Protect Me Carl

I was the last one in the room. by this time, we had told Otis.where our group was and they all road the RV here. everyone was asleep. the clock read 1 in the morning. but I couldn't leave. if Carl woke up, I'd have to be there. as Carl slept, I had to be there. if Carl slipped away, I had to be there. Hours had gone.by. I just sat there. staring at him. I would only cry on and off now, only when I thought about all of the good times. I tried my best not to, though.

1:30. I heard the door slowly open a crack. it was Hershel' s oldest daughter. she took a seat next to me.

" I don't believe we have properly met," she began in a whisper. "I'm Maggie."

" Theodora."

" Theodora. that is a beautiful name. I wish I had a good solid name like Theodora. You got any nick names?"

" Blondie." she chuckled.

" Blondie, huh. and who calls you that?"

" Carl. sometimes. not Alot. mostly thee, Thea, or Theodora. never Dora." silence. after a while, Maggie spoke again.

" I am really glad we got to know each other, and you seem like a very nice girl." I held Carl's hand in one hand and rubbed it with the other.

" And because I really like you, I'm gonna tell you that this is unhealthy. You need rest. You need sleep, honey."

" I can't leave."

" Why?"

" What if he wakes up? huh? What If he wakes up, and he's all alone?" silence again.

2:00.

" Its time, Theodora." at this time I was just using one hand to hold Carl's. Maggie took hold of my other one and began leading me out of the room. " Come on." I held Carl's hand until it was only our fingers touching. his hand then dropped, and I move slowly away.

" Where you going?" I heard in a mumble that was almost a whisper. I stormed back into the room. Maggie followed. there he was, lying on the bed, smiling at me. " hey sunshine." I began to cry again.

" I'll go wake Rick and Lori. " Maggie announced. off she went.

" I missed you Carl."

" I missed you too."

" they got the bullet out. We were just waiting for you to come to, and that's how we'd be sure you were okay."

" Well here I am'"

" thank God" I leaned in for a kiss. i just sat there, kissing, trying to make sure I was doing it right.

" should we come back later?" Rick asked while laughing. that was the first time I had ever seen him laugh. Rick and Lori ran up to the bed. Lori began to speak through her tears of joy.

" You're okay now, Carl. you're gonna be fine. I promise."
