Chapter 1: Surprise

This may sound stupid but I am really certain about doing this. Eight years is long enough and perhaps, we should already start our journey to forever. I'm just so excited to see my future-husband after almost a year.

"Ms. Marquez, can't we really change your mind? You are the future CEO of this company. You cannot just abandon the chance—"

"I'm really sorry, Pamela. Sigurado na ako dito eh. It's time for me to choose my happiness. I've spent my five years earning and this is the right time to give myself the reward I long deserve."I said heartily. "Mami-miss ko kayong lahat."

On board, I can't help thinking about meeting Blaze and imagining how he'd look seeing me without his anticipation. Glancing at the velvet box in my hand, I cannot suppress the feeling of excitement as my mind wanders to the future which we dreamt together for eight years now. Finally, the plane landed and I set my feet again on the grounds of Manila after a year.

"Hailey, guess where I am right now?"I excitedly chirped on the phone with my cousin slash bestfriend.

"Why am I feeling suddenly nervous Rylai? Please don't tell me you quit your executive job and perfect life to fly to Manila as you've mentioned last week."

"You're really brilliant. You just summarized what I did. Ano na? Sunduin mo 'ko!"

My heart started pounding so fast when she suddenly became silent on the other end for about five minutes.

"Hailey?"

"Please Ry. Go home. Claim your perfect life again. Please... get a ticket right now and leave."she pleaded on the line and sounded like she's crying.

"Is something wrong Lee? I can just ride a taxi to your place. Hold on, papunta na ako—"

"Ano ba Ry? Umuwi ka ng Cebu! Wala rito ang buhay mo, okay? Makinig ka sa'kin, utang na loob!"biglang sigaw niya na nagpatigil sa'kin sa paglalakad. "Don't think about going in my place. Go home, Ry. Please go home."she said and hung up.

Lahat ng excitement na naramdaman ko kanina ay naglaho. Instead, I felt so scared. Sa halip na dumiretso sa apartment ni Hailey, sumakay ako ng taxi para pumunta sa condo ni Blaze. Siguro naman, hindi sila pareho ng magiging reaction ni Hailey kapag nalaman niyang nasa Manila na ako.

For about half an hour now, I stood up with my luggage in hand as I waited for him to open the door. Nakailang pindot na rin ako sa buzzer pero walang lumalabas. I can't use the intercom either. Otherwise, the element of surprise will be spoiled. He can easily recognize my voice, even a single sigh from me. Nang magsimulang mamanhid ang paa ko, I decided to just get my duplicate key and opened the door. Dahan-dahan na pumasok ako. I placed my things carefully on the couch after securing the ring for my proposal. Bago ko hinawakan ang door handle, I gave out a deep breath.

This is it, Ry.

As soon as I told myself the line, I slid the handle down and the door opened; revealing me a woman, bare and naked, on top of the man I'll be proposing to.

In a snap, they stopped their love-making and both turned around to face me. Even with my trembling knees, I managed to get out of the room. I let out my tears as I reached the couch and cared less if his woman might think I'm pathetic.

"What are you doing here?"

I looked up to him after hearing his question. Please, tell me this isn't real. Somebody please wake me up. What we have for eight years was perfect and there was not a single chance that I envisaged to see us in this situation. 

"Blaze... what was that?"wala sa sariling nasambit ko.

"Don't be stupid. You saw it—"he replied, his voice lifeless and calm.

Gusto ko siyang sigawan at sumbatan pero nanghihina ako. Walang salitang lumalabas sa bibig ko at tanging nagawa ko lang ay ang umiyak.

"Leave."he demanded, making me panic.

"What? N—no. Blaze, no."I muttered as I hugged him.

"What are you doing?"he asked insensitively while he tried to push me. "Get off me."

"No..."

Nagtagumpay siya sa pagtulak sa'kin ngunit niyakap ko siya ulit. This time, he pushed me forcibly so I stumbled down the floor. 

"Stay out of my life! I don't want you anymore! How many times do I have to tell you that?"he shouted making me dart in surprise. "Leave and don't ever show yourself to me again."

"Blaze, no! You promised me that we'll get married when I get back here. I'm here... I'm here now..."pagsusumamo ko. I immediately took the ring out of the box. "Marry me Blaze... marry me—"

"Get up there and leave."kalmadong utos niya na lalong nagpasikip ng dibdib ko.

"What happened? Blaze, tell me... Why? Wala akong maintindihan sa nangyayari. Okay naman tayo eh—"sunod-sunod na tanong ko habang niyayakap ko ang binti niya.

"Don't wait for me to drag you out of the door, Rylai."walang pagdadalawang-isip na saad niya.

"Mahal na mahal kita... alam mo 'yan. Hindi ko kayang mawala ka. Wag mo'ng gawin sa'kin 'to oh? Please grumpy..."pagmamakaawa ko.

He held me up and grabbed my wrist firmly to lead me out of the door. I halted and stood firmly my ground. He still dragged me so while I halted and fought his strength to pull me out, I stumbled on the floor again. The next thing I knew, there were arms helping me up.

"What do you think you're doing Blaze?"his mom yelled at him. "Honey, what happened?"she asked when she faced me. "Nasaktan ka ba?"

Walang pasubaling yumakap ako sa kanya at humagulhol. Habang naramdaman kong humigpit ang pagyakap niya sa'kin, lalong lumakas ang hagulhol ko.

"Rylai, hija, umupo ka muna."she stated as she gestured me to the couch.

Sinundan niya si Blaze na papasok sa kwarto.

"You're not going anywhere, Blaze! Pag-usapan niyong dalawa ang problema niyo and fix i—And who is this woman!!!???"

When I heard his mom's trembling voice, I immediately ran towards the room. She was pulling up the woman's hair but Blaze was protecting her. Seeing that scene broke my heart to pieces. I was supposed to be that woman he promised to protect from anything and anyone. I was supposed to be in her place. I was supposed to be her.

"Tita, tama na po."awat ko sa kanya at saka hinawakan siya sa magkabilang balikat. "Umalis na po tayo."

Habang nakasakay kami sa kotse, tahimik na tahimik si tita Miah samantalang patuloy ako sa pag-iyak ng palihim. I can't believe I am the one being surprised this much. Umaasa akong panaginip lang ang lahat at bukas paggising ko, ako parin ang nag-iisang babaeng pinangakuan ni Blaze na makasama habang buhay. Pero iba ang sinisigaw ng tadhana sa'kin na ayaw tanggapin ng puso't isipan ko. Hindi pwede... Hindi ko kaya.
